Nome residents watch for the Norge, Amundsen expedition airship, unsure if it missed Nome amid fog and rain. Naval stations report signals but no direct contact yet. Meanwhile Akron power plant violence stirs tension as strikers blamed for a blast near the NOP substation.
Sergeant Miller told to halt all gambling in Canton from 2 to 10 PM after Chief Lengel, backed by Civil Service Commissioners Janson and Burris, announced action against clubs formed to resist police raids. The proclamation blamed Miller for gambling and outlined disciplinary aims without detailing who would cover other hours.
In Ilkesbarre Pennsylvania a fire at midnight killed five children of Lonatz Shedlowski of Plymouth. Eleanor 11 Helen 10 Mary 9 Anna 7 and Agnes 6 died in the burning home. Firemen recovered two other children and the mother and one son escaped. A still was found in the ruins during investigation.

Henry Peever and his 70-year-old mother escaped injury when a car driven by W B Frauntfelder of Nevada bumped Peever’s Ford onto a railroad crossing in Marion Ohio. Frauntfelder and companion were arrested. Frauntfelder fined 100 for drunken driving. W H Williams, 37, fined 100 for liquor possession. E W Knapp, 59, fined 50 and Mrs Williams 25 for drunkenness.
In Cleveland on May 3 the trial of Mrs Edna Bekrod wife of Akron attorney D H Bekrod opened in federal court. She was a clerk on the B and railroad and owner of a detective agency in the Ohio bank building Akron accused of using the mails to defraud.
Judge U S Johnston fined I Kemerling of Akron 50 dollars plus costs and imposed five days in the workhouse and a 30 day driving ban after a drunk driving charge. Ed Feld, also from Akron, had his case continued. Other outcomes include juvenile authority referrals for trespassing and several 15 dollar fines for intoxication and speeding. Two women arrested for traffic warrants were discharged with costs.
Wall Street reports a light trading day with irregular price swings in key stocks. General Motors rose late as the market seemed to discount an extra dividend of 4 a share declared by its board on May 13 despite weak motor shares earlier.
Dr. John W. Dowd aged 79 president of the University of Toledo and longtime Republican state politician died at his home after three weeks of illness.
The burned remains of Frank Yingling's shack near Massillon were razed by order of the state fire marshal. Akron deputy W S Palmer witnessed the destruction amid overhanging smoke as local observers watched the fire spread rapidly through the age worn structure.
May 13 John H Bennett street car motorman was slightly burned about the hands today in putting out a fifty dollar blaze on his car caused by a short circuit on the line.
Doncaster reports 68 miners sentenced to three months hard labor after rioting starkly as 80 more are arrested following attacks on a newspaper truck and food lorries. In London half a million railway workers vote to continue the strike as railroads plan to lock out those who reject reinstatement terms.
Berlin reports cut Berlin Warsaw link as Pilsudski forces tighten grip on Warsaw. Marshal Pilsudski declares control plans to dissolve parliament and form a new cabinet while Witos government retreats to loyalist areas. Troop numbers rise and key public buildings and barracks fall under control.
Lewis C. Pifer of 1125 11th Street Southwest filed for divorce from Mryde Pifer on grounds she neglected his baby chicks while he worked at the building trade. He says he raises chicks at home and that his wife left to visit others, neglecting the peeps.
Welfare Director Harper announced 2110 acres near New London in Huron county as the site for a northeastern Ohio state feeble minded institution. He asked the state control board to approve spending not more than 286 822 for the land purchase and said condemnation would follow to transfer title. The initial installation cost is fixed at 319 617.
