Governor Cox visits Canton to praise Stark county schools for aiding the war effort. A vast crowd of children, patriotic dress, flags, and singing fills the McKinley monument area. The event showcases youthful zeal and collective support for the war movement.
Governor Cox led a vast parade with thousands of schoolchildren from Stark county and surrounding towns through rain threats to McKinley monument. Flags waved as boys and girls in uniforms and costumes marched to raise support for War Savings and Thrift Stamps, with Cox stressing youth involvement and national duty.

Claude C. Ellison 56 of 137 Fifth Street Northeast, shoe last maker, was brought to Canton from Cleveland after a nervous breakdown linked to government shoe material contracts. His brother in law Postmaster William Caldwell and wife traveled to Cleveland. Ellison was found wandering by police in Cleveland and admitted to hospital. A Cleveland report of an attempted suicide is said to be unfounded per Assistant US District Attorney Breitenstein.
Wilson Hawkins Newark's superintendent elects Canton post at 4000 a year. Canton board weighs his terms while Newark fights to keep him. Hawkins plans to review Canton schools and avoid tearing down existing programs, seeking time to decide. He praises Canton and its growth potential.

Governor Cox saluted 23 Stark county prize winners on the platform as he handed out War Savings and Thrift Stamps awards. He praised Arthur Yoder of Louisville for a county record $3700 in ten days, met a shy seven year old girl with cheers, and lauded Walter Bordelaour of Hartford and Vencenzio Intoccio of Liberty for their achievements. He noted the boys’ and girls’ patriotism and presented Miss Mary King with an American flag, stressing teacher influence and family support.
In Pensacola on May 1, Richard MecCalla of Toledo died after their aeroplane burst into flames during a practice flight near Santa Rosa. George F. Henderson of Pawtucket was found barely alive and is expected to die. Both were student aviators from the naval station and were flying at about 1,000 feet when the crash occurred.

British forces report the German naval base at Ostend effectively blocked after yesterday raid. The old cruiser Vindictive, 826 feet long, jammed bow into the pier and was used to ferry 40 personnel to safety amid gunfire and searchlight glare.

American artillery in northwest Toul sector disrupted a German gas concentration aimed at enveloping Allied lines. French forces then conducted a rapid raid, taking 20 prisoners, while American and German patrols traded quick clashes nearby. In Pi Cardy and Cantigny area, heavy artillery shelled German reserves and new fires appeared at Montdidier with an ammunition dump burned.
