Press reports indicate Coolidge may veto the tax bill as a countrywide issue. The debate centers on Mellon tax reductions and applying a 1923 income cut to 1924 earnings, with the next administration unlikely to convene before March 4, 1925. In the Italian quarter of the city two Italian men were found dead after a duel. One man, 24 year old Baseem, lay with four bullets in his heart. The other unidentified victim had a bullet to the brain. No revolvers were found nearby. Neighbors saw them stagger and fall, but no one picked up weapons. Detectives say the shots were fired at close range.
In Columbus on May 8 the court sustained a ruling voiding parts of a mobile tax law. The decision revokes a provision levying horsepower and weight taxes tied to the case brought by Foltz Grocery Baking Co of Cincinnati against Secretary of Brown. The Fisher Brothers Co. is also involved as the tax collection target.

A. A. Grorud testified before the Senate Daugherty investigating committee that the Republican National Committee aimed to smear Senator Burton Wheeler and Senator Thomas Walsh. Grorud said Blair Coan admitted investigating Wheeler in Montana with no expectation the indictment would stick.

Washington May U S and Japan plan negotiations in Washington and Tokyo for a new immigration treaty after Congress approves the Coolidge compromise on Japanese exclusion. Nine months would be allowed for treaty negotiation and senate approval, with bitter opposition from exclusionists likely.
Indianapolis May 8 The Ku Klux Klan-backed Ed Jackson led the Republican governor race by about 28 000 votes over five rivals with late returns. Anti Klan Mayor Shank trailed by over 100 000. In the Republican presidential race Coolidge led Johnson by over 200 000. Democratic governor hopeful Carleton McCulloch led the field by about 45 000 but no majority, convention nominee expected. Mayor George Durgan of LaFayette trailed in the anti-Klan camp.
Evelyn Nesbit has dropped her appeal against the insanity verdict in the Thaw case. She told reporters there is no use pursuing further millions and cited lack of funds after Thaw was judged sane in Philadelphia.

Ohio Attorney General Crabbe issued a ruling to Warden Thomas that after serving the minimum term under general statutes a penitentiary prisoner on a general sentence may be eligible for parole despite any Norwood act minimum. The warden said the decision could allow parole for convicts with determinate sentences, noting many could benefit if clemency is granted. without it a Norwood act prisoner must serve the full court sentence.
Senator George W. Norris announces from Lincoln Nebraska that he will not seek to organize party support for a straight ticket and urges the abolition of party responsibility in favor of individual accountability. The May release frames a tactical break from party lines within the Republican camp.
A religious fanatic was shot and killed in the Federal hotel lobby after a revolver duel with police and a warrants agent. He used the alias Peter Gaston, registered at another hotel, with cards showing Pierpont, Michigan as his home.

Washington May The soldiers bonus bill as passed by Congress will cost 6.7 billion dollars over 60 years according to treasury actuaries for President Coolidge. Of this total the actual payout to soldiers is about 3.7 billion with interest and admin charges making up the rest. Details show per capita cost of one dollar annually, and a sinking fund of about 3.69 billion dollars over 20 years to finance maturities. Treasury officials warn against using bonds for cash advances, noting most veterans would cash bonds early, risking a broader financial impact.
Corina Modell returned the kidnapped baby to mother Mary De Marco and the kidnapper was held without bail after a preliminary hearing. Anthony De Marco is detained as a material witness and released on a $1,000 bond.
California voters show President Coolidge leading Senator Johnson by about 44,700 in early returns with roughly 1,000 precincts reporting. Coolidge 284,413 Johnson 229,451, a historic first defeat for Johnson in 15 years.
