Council failed to condemn funds for a reservoir site delaying a water works project. Water committee member William F Hobush and others blamed for defeat. Chicago hydraulic engineers advised supervision of pumping upgrades. decision postponed to follow-up.
Hall a farm hand for J. H. McDowell on the North End was badly injured and later died from a blast of dynamite used to remove stumps. He suffered head lacerations and a fractured jaw. He was taken to Ingleside hospital by Reemsnyder’s ambulance.
The French mission led by Marshal Joffre is due in Columbus around 6 15 this evening and will stay about an hour and a quarter. Governor Cox Mayor Karb and civic groups will meet the party at the station and escort them to a reception house with escort from the Columbus barracks Ohio National Guard and Ohio State University cadets assisting.
Ohio anti saloon league officials announced a campaign to collect 20 000 petitions in every precinct by May 30. They predict more than three times the required signatures will be secured and say the petitions will be filed at headquarters by the deadline, with state filing to follow.
Father Fridolin Ankly 84, assisting priest of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Canton, seriously ill in Mercy Hospital after heart failure. Former pastor of St. Mary's Wooster for 50 years, recently reduced Canton masses from six to four. He resides with his niece Miss Theresa Aubly.
Despite a record 5 000 more residents filing voluntary property returns the Stark County assessors will visit each home. Auditor Oberlin and Tax Deputy Garman said the law requires individuals to report and the assessors will verify, with visits to all districts. Voluntary returns reached 29 496, surpassing prior years, though many report property below the $100 exemption and pay no tax.

W. C. Lane the school board clerk was told to advertise for bids on the construction of the new Clarendonavy grade school. Plans have been accepted from C. C. and A. L. Thayer of New Castle Pennsylvania and bids are to be received June 6.

Clarence Hambach a Shadyside conductor received 650 volts while adjusting a trolley rope atop a Market avenue street car Monday evening. He was found unconscious and revived with a lung motor. he is in Mercy hospital with burns to his hands and is reported improving. Division Superintendent Scanlon could not determine how the shock occurred.
The U boats reportedly sank over one million tons of merchant shipping in four weeks, prompting the U S Shipping Board to announce a colossal ship building program to clear sea lanes and sustain food and munitions for Britain and allies. Navy officials refused to discuss details while naval leaders map tasks for the American navy in Paris war talks.
Fred Biechle and R B Kelly engineers in the city engineers office went to Cleveland Tuesday for an examination to enter the army engineers corps. Jerome Heller also applied for enlistment but was not called to Cleveland. The others left promptly after a telephone from Major Bond in Cleveland.

Howard Hines thirty an employee of Hagenbeck and Wallace shows was shot early Tuesday by an unidentified coworker near the old Pennsylvania depot at 6th street and Savannah Avenue as the circus loaded for Alliance. Hines is in Mercy hospital with a left side wound. his condition is serious.
Secretary Lansing declared he will dismiss instantly anyone in the state department connected with leaks or publishing intent of administration policies. He outlined steps to close channels of information beyond the secretary and his foreign intelligence board.

Conferees on the conscription bill failed to settle all issues with four main points of disagreement remaining. The sticking points include Harding’s authorization for Col Roosevelt’s offer to raise a division for service abroad, the Fall amendment for a three-regiment Mexican border patrol, liquor use in the army, and the conscription age limit.
Corporal William Brazier reports from the war department that men can enlist in the quartermasters and engineers corps. Clerical work is sought for the quartermasters and tradesmen for the engineers. Since the war declaration, two thirds of local enlistments come from outside the city, with one third from Canton.
May 8 A U S recruiting notices were posted on Ed Beeson’s saloon wall in Detroit. Heeson removed the posters with a garden hose, prompting a large crowd to flood the scene and beat him before police intervened.
May 8 report from El Paso says Villistas led by Jose Ynez Salazar raided the T. C. ranch, looting stores and houses and driving off about 100 horses. American residents are said to have escaped. Authorities report smuggling of dynamite across the border by Salazar’s agents in recent days.
Berlin police uncover an extensive bread card scam surpassing prior cases. A large printing facility was found printing bogus bread vouchers and a regular distribution system was in operation, according to a Berlin despatch.
Chief Justice Nichols swore in twenty members of the soldier class who passed the special bar exam for law students enlisting in the federal army. Certificates were issued by Clerk McKeen authorizing practice in all his courts.
Washington report quotes the U S Public Health Service asserting typhoid fever is preventable. It cites polluted water deficient sewage disposal and impure milk as the sole dangerous causes and blames municipal carelessness for outbreaks.
James Poe paid $39 for a freight train ride between Maxsillon and Canton. He was badly beaten by a crowd of thugs on the train and found early Tuesday morning wandering the street. Pr T H Landor, jail physician, sent him to Mercy hospital for treatment.
Richard Hubbard Rust prominent Methodist Episcopal minister died Sunday at a daughter’s home in Avondale. Funeral services were conducted at Spring Grove cemetery. He was born September 5, 1842 in Ellington Connecticut and educated at Poultney Vermont Middletown Wesleyan University and Union Theological Seminary. He served as presiding elder of the Cincinnati district and held a thirty second degree Mason title.

A Rome despatch citing Corriere della Sera says three shots were fired at the German Kaiser in Berlin while he rode in a motor car. The would-be assassin was arrested and two bullets hit the auto. a third bullet went wild. Details from German police were not released.
Washington reports the United States extended a 100 million dollar war loan to France. Treasury Secretary McAdoo delivered the warrant to Jules Jusserand, witnessed by Crosby and embassy attaches. Funds come from 5 percent certificates maturing June 3.
The national legislative committee of the Anti Saloon League adopted a prohibition program for the current special session. It calls for banning liquor sales to soldiers and near camps, prohibiting the use of food products to brew beverages, and forbidding liquor traffic during the war to maximize national efficiency. The measures were added to the army bill and referred to a conference committee of the two houses.
Supt A J Sherlock reports 15 applications filed in three days by laborers and mechanics with three seeking farm work and two securing positions. Tuscarawas county agent calls for five farm hands for Tuscarawasco and three for Carroliceo, referred by Mayor Stolberg. Sherlock expects an assistant from Columbia to boost outreach to Canton employers.
