Three Russian aviators from the Black Sea fleet bombarded Constantinople causing heavy damage. Dispatches report shells from Russian warships near the Bosphorus within ten miles of the Turkish capital, with claims of weapon seizures.
Berlin May 7 An official statement details the first stages of the battle in western Galicia between the Carpathians and the Vistula where Austro German forces under Gen Von Mackensen defeated the Russians. The report says the Russians were surprised. the bombardment began May 1, trenches were cut, and by May 2 the Russians fled. About 20 000 prisoners were taken along with numerous guns and machine guns.
In Ti en Tsin on May 7 the Japanese minister Ki Hioki prepared to leave Pekin as Japanese troops move toward the Manchurian railway. Russia has massed a large army in Mongolia and could invade northern China with Japan if war breaks out, while the Chinese cabinet seeks a cautious session and hopes Japan will modify demands without hostilities.
Constantinople May 7 The annihilation of a battalion of the allies troops by Turks in the Dardanelles fighting is announced. On May 5 an enemy battalion was annihilated near Ain Burnu and parts of entrenchments were captured. More than 100 rifles and one machine gun taken. Night operations at Sedd-el-Bahr inflicted heavy losses on the English. three machine guns and ammunition captured. In all, ten machine guns were taken.
The Harrison liner Candidate, a 5858 ton British steamer built in Glasgow in 1906, was sunk by a German submarine off Waterford as it sailed from Liverpool. The crew was rescued. The attack occurred near where St George's Channel meets the Atlantic.
The Acorn Liquor Co. installs a 159 foot bar near the Ohio Wheeling crossing to serve both Bridgeport and Wheeling patrons. The bar seats 75 with 9 bartenders, opening for the third day as crowds flock from across the river. Kitchen and Household Wares advertised by Klein & Heffelman Co. ACV.
The Klein and Heffelman Company sells Gordon hand made auto tires claimed to be guaranteed. The offer stresses Canton origin and lasting quality as a selling point.
Petrograd reports a major Austro German offensive in Poland as German and Austrian forces push from the Dunajec toward Lupkow and Dukla passes while Russian air scouts foil movements. Heavy losses are claimed with about 60 000 enemy casualties since May 1 as battles rage near Jaslo Tarnow and in Galicia. The Paris Petit Parisien cites Sazanias saying Entente powers stand united and expect to continue the war until terms are dictated.
