Chief Lengel told Mayor Ball in a morning conference that the department should have 100 officers, currently 60. A plan to add 25 officers could raise strength to 85, easing workloads and maintaining patrols amid staffing shortages.
Members of the Pelish Speaking Union of Ohio will hear T Rhondda Williams of England address Columbus tonight at 8 in the hotel ballroom. Williams, Labour Party candidate in Cambridge, is visiting to promote English Speaking peoples ties and cooperation with the MacDonald government, with Claude Meeker leading the local union.
New York May 6 Kate Claxton retired American actress known as Americas Bernhardt died suddenly in her apartment. The actress had last appeared on stage and in films including Orphans East Lynne and Mle in various genres thrilling audiences in the provinces and towns.
A man surrendered to authorities after a raid at his home and pleaded guilty to a $249 fine. A colored inmate serving seven months for a law violation refused parole and will serve time in custody with meals provided.
Youngstown May 6 Thomas R Marshall former vice president spoke to the Y M C A crowd arguing against the presidential primary saying he would not want the job even if offered and that the system is a bad thing likely to be discarded as the people wake up.

New York May 6 Elsie Ferguson the stage and screen star has married Frederick Warlock English actor age 38 The couple met during the Moon Flower tour Warlock is the third husband for Ferguson who divorced Thomas B Clarke Jr last summer in Paris after seven years of marriage
May 6 report states Christ Diehl Brewing company purchased the Defiance Mineral Water works and will dismantle the plant to absorb its business and operate from the brewery amid prohibition pressures.
Columbus May 6 1924 state insurance superintendent Conn revoked the 1924 licenses of the Lenihan Company L Lenihan and Company and E P Lenihan individually at Cleveland for reasons not disclosed in the notice.
Laura Jane Brown, age 3 years 7 months, is the first entrant in Canton Daily News Better Baby Health contest. The event, aided by the Visiting Nurse Society and city clinic, aims to chart health for preschool children with 28 cash prizes for the 14 healthiest boys and 14 healthiest girls. Parents are urged to book studio appointments for portraits and medical exams as part of the campaign.
In Steubenville Ohio last night about eight thousand people in the Hagenbeck-Wallace tent fled as a pistol duel in an adjoining actor’s tent sparked by a poker game left Henry Mayers mortally wounded from a shot through the right lung. A suspect, identified only as a negro, fled the scene.
Charles Palmer of Redtown was among 80 plus arrests during a month long liquor cleanup in Athens County. Fines totaling about 40 000 dollars were assessed and the state supreme court has ruled that those fines must be paid.
C C Curtis says he was framed by underworld figures and perjurers as he defends his administration after removal by Gov Donahey. He asserts his brother J B Curtis was similarly targeted and claims Canton has never been cleaner. He releases a full statement detailing his view of the Canton charges and hearing.
In Covington Kentucky on May 6 the defense failed to overrule the first indictment count against Congressman John W Langley for conspiracy to evade beverage liquor taxes. Judge Cochran ruled the count nullified by the Volstead Act as Mabel Walker Willebrandt conferred with the prosecutor. Indicted with Langley are M F Muth Walter B Carey Milton Lipschutz and Albert F Slater.
Maryland gave Calvin Coolidge about 25 000 votes statewide and 4 213 in Baltimore while 2 000 statewide and 530 in Baltimore backed uninstructed delegates. Slightly incomplete returns also show Frederick N Zibman probable GOP nominee for the Sixth district.
Celia Cooney and her husband Ed were sentenced to ten to twenty years in prison by Justice Martin in New York. The case described Cooney as Brooklyn's bobbed hair bandit and followed a high profile crime spree.
A Melilla dispatch reports 119 Rif tribesmen killed or wounded in an ambush by a Spanish cavalry column in eastern Morocco. In the western zone Rif forces struck a Spanish relief column, wounding several soldiers.

Canton city council approved an $800 000 sewage disposal plant project by a 9 to 3 vote. The contract with McCaskey and Reese of Canton for engineering services was authorized with a limit of two and a half percent of the plant price, clearing the way to begin work within days and relieve parts of the city lacking sewer service.
Miss Matilda Hexter a 15 year old girl swallowed poison on a street corner in Columbus on Monday to avoid corporal punishment at home. She remained alive at White Cross hospital early today and cited fear of being whipped upon returning home.
