Washington May 5 The war department announced that gas is now considered a tool for policing riots and prison outbreaks. Army officials said 38500 banks and 250 police departments are equipped with gas devices to release it instantly. The gas leaves no lasting effect, according to the chemical warfare department.

Elevator Crash in Ashland Building Injures Fourteen
In Chicago on May 5 an elevator fell from the eighth floor of the Ashland Building 20 story loop, injuring fourteen people none fatally. A broken cable caused the accident and firemen freed trapped passengers after a half hour. Operator Carl Blenski said safety devices could not be clamped when the break occurred. Serious injuries included FE W Hodkins, 60, a retired banker with a broken leg and internal injuries.

Open Grate and Death Is Result
In Columbus on May 5 a 14 year old dancer Sarah Ginter died after a spark from an open stove set her flimsy ballet skirt alight. She was with teacher Miss Stella J Becker and others preparing for a recital when the accident occurred at a photography studio. She burned from neck to knees and died last night.
