Gov Cox announces enlistment plans and a county draft committee to handle registration for national service. Norwood reports 6000 registrants while officials expect a broad mobilization with medical inspectors unpaid and local precincts hosting registration in coming days.
Jomas Brennan was found guilty by a jury after about two hours deliberation on charges of burglary and larceny. The revolver valued at three dollars was the stolen property. Brennan claimed police used third degree methods to force a confession, but the jury rejected this claim and returned a verdict of guilty. He remained calm as the judge dismissed the jury and Brennan was taken to jail.
Washington May 5 Congress moves to grant the president sweeping powers to mobilize all resources for anti submarine warfare. A shipping board bill would massively expand shipbuilding and authorize requisitioning materials and craft for national use. Senate action on German ship seizure and a $50 million war risk bill for merchant crews is awaited. A proposed $5 million board would fund submarine defense research, with North Dakota's senator McCumber pushing to study new countermeasures.
County delegates receive eleven credentials each. Fifteen extra credentials go to Cleveland Cincinnati Columbus Toledo Akron Dayton Youngstown and Canton. Counties touching Marion county gain fifteen extra. Marion county schools outside Marion city get one each. Five more credentials go to large towns not in those counties if pledged. Marion city workers have no limit. Delegates must register at Convention Headquarters and obtain credentials from their county secretary.

Columbus May 5 The war with Germany could endure years warns Franklin Martin of the Council of National Defense. He cautions medical students to delay enlistment and remain in instruction at Ohio State University College of Medicine until the nation can use their services.
Canton and Alliance merchants faced a downpour and stalled weekend business as Stark Electric workers refused to meet a Chamber of Commerce committee. The union and company stood firm on recognition, leaving cars idle and no Saturday service despite the typical weekend rush.
Mt Union college trustees will vote at June meeting on enforcing compulsory military training for male students. The board discussed it Friday and will wait for national government actions. Voluntary drill continues with students using campus grounds under a former Culver Military Academy officer. The college sustains a $750000 endowment drive, with Stark Co pledging $250000 and plans to raise the rest from other donors.
Two men held up Friday night pocketing 3.50 in a pair of robberies. Charles Bainter, 518 South Street Northeast was robbed near Stark Brewing Co. police report a blue serge suit and black hat worn by the suspect, age forty to fifty. E C Richards, 935 High Avenue, also robbed on 2nd Street Southeast near the Wheeling and Lake Erie tracks, but no valuables were found. Burglars entered the Artificial Ice and Storage Co office at 855 Navarre Street but found little change in the safe.
Canton men plan to organize an ambul ance unit for the United States Army. Lieut Col Joseph A Hall said the war department authorized forming two medical units and Canton is to supply one. Mayor Stolberg and three local promoters express confidence in recruiting 119 enlisted men and two physicians. Hall will oversee recruitment next week and the Canton unit is to be fully motorized.
British reports from London dated May 1965 describe further eastward progress near Arras with repulsed German counterattacks. The Craonne sector near Laon yields strategic gains for French forces under General Nivelle, widening the front and threatening the Hindenburg line. More than 1,000 Germans reportedly captured in the Champagne front fighting.
A Lake Erie tidal flood drenched Camp Perry on May 5 forcing 604 Ohio Engineers soldiers from tents to the concrete mess hall. Two feet of water covered the camp as winds drove the surge all night, lights out, soldiers scrambling for belongings. Lt. Col. J R McQuigg ordered boats and provisions sent by special train as water drained.
City Solicitor Walter S. Ruff says the N. O. T. cannot raise the Canton five cent fare to six cents without state utilities commission approval and court action. N. O. T. general manager A. Blinn is in the east discussing the proposal amid higher equipment and labor costs. Most Canton franchises cap at five cents. some are silent on the fare.
Bids Friday on Meyers Lake Road and Ravenna Louisville Road came in above engineer estimates making contractor awards unlikely this year. Canton Canal Fulton Road and Canton Middlebranch Road and Alliance Limaville Road bids were satisfactory and likely to be awarded next week.
Miss Josephine Falbey a waitress was instantly killed when a seven passenger car wrecked on the return from Galion. Passengers Leola Kaufman Wade Culler and Noah H Schrenk were injured Wade Culler suffered both knees dislocated others with minor injuries. The driver reportedly lost control of the machine.
The Cleveland Automobile club asks the city council to regulate taxicabs. Secretary Fred H. Caley says many chauffeurs cooperate with crooks and bad women, congregate in doorways and sidewalks in intoxicated states, and insult women passing by. He argues drivers fleece patrons by aligning with criminals and untrustworthy women.
Mike Sellagen, crossing watchman for the Pennsylvania Railroad at Carnahaway NE, was struck by a train Friday night. He was transported by Miller Blanchard’s ambulance to Mercy Hospital where doctors found only minor injuries.
Reports from Petrograd reveal grave disorders and street fighting with deaths, while the provisional government struggles amid financial strain. The foreign office formed by soldiers and workers aims to report events abroad. Milukoff may resign amid rising unrest and mutinous garrisons.
A grey squirrel spent Thursday afternoon at the southeast corner of the courthouse watching crowds and clerks while nibbling maple buds. Officials, asking for restraint, noted the visitor’s odd presence and that the animal vanished during the night with one report linking it to a courthouse clerk.
Washington May 6. The federal council of churches of Christ in America will convene next Tuesday to mobilize church forces for wartime needs. A nationwide war message will be prepared for broadcast. The council unites 30 Protestant evangelical denominations with about 18 million members to plan relief, welfare for armed forces, and conservation of moral and social strength.

New York May 5 The naval consulting board announces a plan designed to destroy submarines and batter fortifications. Thomas A Edison is credited with leading the effort and says a concrete experimental plan has been submitted to the navy department.
Washington May 5 the British mission issued a cautious statement after a cordial meeting with Arthur James Balfour and Irish American leaders. It warned that American sentiment now could misread the Irish question and stressed that Ireland should settle its own demands before Britain acts.
Arrangements were made at the Canton Women’s Suffrage association meeting for attending the Mississippi Conference of the Women’s Suffrage Association in Columbus May 12 to 14. Mrs. Margaret Allman spoke on the history of woman’s suffrage and Grace Myser reported on organizing suffrage groups in smaller towns. A prize masquerade dance is planned for Saturday night at the Auditorium with Admiral Seady listed.
