Mississippi River flood defeats defenders and swallows large sections of northeastern Louisiana. Water covers up to 560 miles wide, forcing mass evacuations across nine parishes as rail and communications collapse and millions in damage accumulates.
San Francisco May 4 The California gas war ended today as several Los Angeles firms raised prices from 12 to 18 cents a gallon. Standard Oil Associated and Union were expected to follow.
H. H. Timken of Timken Roller Bearing Co praises the Canton Daily News for winning the Pulitzer gold medal for meritorious newspaper service in 1926. He spoke after returning from New York where he attended business affairs and urged openness to root out crime and crookedness to restore Canton’s reputation.
Los Angeles on May 4 reports congratulations and a Pulitzer gold medal award for splendid service in the name of civic righteousness. The Daily News is praised for real civic service with signatory Atlef Pomerene.

Detective Ora Slater resumed the Don R. Mellett murder probe as Floyd Streitenberger’s trial opens Monday. Prosecutor Henry W. Harter said Slater’s whereabouts and talks with defendant Louis Mazer remain undisclosed. The state hinges on Mazer’s testimony while the defense questions his credibility. Judge Frank M. Clevenger will preside. courtroom access to the trial is expected.
London reports that the British government sent a new note to the United States outlining its position on war debts. Drafted by Winston Churchill, the note responds to recent remarks by Secretary Mellon and will be published tomorrow in Britain.

Maj. Harry F. Hazlett U S Army former McKinley High athletic coach will head the University of Akron department of military science and tactics starting in June to relieve Capt. William Tydings. A Mt. Union College and Ohio National Guard alumnus, Hazlett attends Fort Leavenworth service schools and will graduate in June.

John H. Evans, 66, an automobile dealer of Van Wert, was found dead in his office with a bullet wound to the head and a pistol nearby. Authorities believe he took his own life due to ill health.
Miss Jeanette Hellbrun, 26, a cripple, died after leaping from the 16th floor of the Shelton hotel in New York. The tragedy occurred on May 4 as she attempted suicide by jumping from the hotel window.

Henry Judd Gray testified at the Snyder Gray murder trial in Long Island City on May 4 and disputed a quoted statement allegedly spoken by Mrs Ruth Brown Snyder about attempting to poison her husband with gas. He said the quote was attributed to him by Mrs Snyder but she had told him she tried to end her husband’s life using gas and failed.
In Berlin on May 4, Mar l Lefkow sky was arrested for forging President Hindburg's name. He allegedly presented an order to the war department authorizing payment of 29,664 for military papers. Reich reen officers scheduled payment later and traced the fraud.
President Machado of Cuba departed Chicago for Cuba via Cincinnati after a whirlwind 43 hour stay. He expects to reach Cuba later today as arranged.
