Official dispatch from General Ironside reports Bolshevik forces attacking in the Vaga sector as Allied troops repelled the assault with heavy losses. Bolshevik gunboats on the Dvina fired on positions but retired, making the river soon navigable for Allies.
Federal Judge Landis watched from a safe distance as a bomb detonated atop a federal building in Chicago. A detective fired five shots, the fifth hitting the device and triggering the explosion, causing alarm among pedestrians. Landis described the device as an active little bomb.
City Auditor Barr warns deficien cy in Canton operates funds for 1920 will reach 314000. A deficiency bond issue or levy could liquidate the debt by voters at a special election or August primaries. Total outstanding debt and planned projects bring proposed bond package to 355700000 with firehouse and Haverland farm purchases. Barr endorses higher taxes for relief while council pursues new revenue measures and possible June 10 or August ballot.

The NC-3 seaplane with eight men aboard and a dead weight of 28 800 pounds underwent a four hour test at Rockaway Point Illinois. The craft left the hangar at 2 55 pm and returned at 4 35 pm without leaving the water after attempts to test two new propellers. Commander Towers says the test was not entirely satisfactory though the plane had earlier passed the five hour official test for the Azores hop.
Vice President Marshall told a Philadelphia audience that the league of nations is essential to democracy as World War I was to make the world safe for it. He warned Bolshevism threatens democracy like influenza and urged restraint from those who advocate it, urging good men to reconsider its spread.
