A man reports his $3 carat diamond stolen from his shirt pocket during a crowded Canton street scene. Police suspect a gang operating between Canton and Cleveland, but witnesses could not identify the thief amid dense crowds.
United Press reports in Springfield Ohio on May 3 that Dr Arthur B ith accused of murdering Florence Cavileer Smith faces a verdict after a 19 day trial. The defense pleads liberty or death as the jury retires to decide whether he dies in the chair or by other means.
Rev. W. A. Rutledge of Simpson M. E. Church urged residents to back Turnbull’s administration, saying it should profit from Schilling’s successes and avoid his failures. He spoke from his touring car at the courthouse steps, noting a large crowd and emphasizing righteousness and civic support.
Petru Cocan arrives in Canton from Kisza Hungary and is smuggled across the Roumanian border inside a bass viol. He finds work in Canton mill, recalls past business ruin, and plans to send money home while seeking eventual return as war threats rise.

Domestic servants in Chicago organize as the Household Workers' association, receiving an AFL charter. A walking delegate will be elected later as housewives must treat maids with respect. The union seeks regular hours, Wednesday and Sunday afternoons off, parlor entertaining rights, and will start an employment agency.
Washington May 3 Secretary Bryan and President Wilson face a growing California Japanese crisis. Bryan speeds east by steam to report in person at 10:40 Thursday morning, with telegraphic dispatches already at the White House. He will brief the president on developments since his Westward order and outline the latest situation.
Frank Dannemiller twenty five son of Augustus Dannemiller of North Market Street was seriously injured when a car driven by A Zaumbach Carroll struck the Dannemiller car as it stood by the roadside. The occupants included Frank and Robert Dannemiller Miss Julienne Dannemiller and the father.
Canton man Antonio Caporelli, fearing Blackhand retribution after a Madison Street shooting of Joan Antonetti, entered the county jail seeking confinement. He says he acted to prevent a life taken and claims fear of reprisal by Antonetti’s associates. He is bound over to the grand jury.
Columbus May 3 Wilbur E. Baker of Fostoria in the state bureau of accounting was named first deputy state auditor announced by State Auditor Donahey this afternoon.
The funeral is set for Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the late residence 801 West Eighth street. Abraham Fournace will be laid to rest in privacy with family and friends in attendance.
Representatives of Paterson manufacturers and business men begin a movement toward settlement of the silk workers strike under the Erdman act after more than two months. Prof. R B Wylie of Iowa City to head an expedition to study Alaska plant life.
A new Ohio law on May 26 changes felony sentences by common pleas court judges to be general terms rather than fixed durations. Prison terms may be terminated by the Ohio Board of Administration. The measure, approved in 1913, follows a similar rule used for state reformatories.
United Press reports in New York that about 60 percent of trainmen favor a strike unless rail executives back off their stance. William G. Lee, president, left New York for Cleveland as ballots are sent out for immediate vote. Ballots cannot be counted until after May 19.
