13 Year Old Girl Lights Fire Opening Massillon Steel Plant
A thirteen year old girl Miss Gertrude Griffith lit the fire under the first open hearth at the Central Steel plant in Massillon opening Monday noon. The plant will begin operations May 15 with 300 workers and will produce steel billets as a feeder to the Massillon Rolling Mill Co. The ceremony included a dinner in front of the furnaces and brief addresses by local officials.
