London May 1 Haig reports local enemy attack on a post near St Julien repulsed by machine guns. Enemy posts in Meteren raided with prisoners taken. French improved Locre positions by a minor enterprise. Front quiet after a heavy German loss in Flanders.
William A. Field, general manager of United Alloy, tendered his resignation to take effect at 10. He offered his services to Charles M. Schwab, head of the U.S. shipbuilding program, but a successor has not been chosen. Field, active in civic affairs, headed the Industrial Baseball League and led Third Liberty Loan drives.
Paris May 10 A Spanish statesman returning from Germany told Paris that if the allies hold Germany is beaten. He spoke to Andre Glarner, Paris correspondent of the Exchange Telegraph Co, at the Spanish frontier.
Belgian refugees report 25 000 men and boys forced to run under German whips near Valenciennes and Maubeuge. Mortality among them is heavy amid the siege and bombardment.

The national war labor board directed the Postal and Western Union Telegraph Companies to stop discharging operators pending settlement talks. The board also asked that each company send representatives to present their case.
