Canton Women May Knit for U S Sailors

Mrs W D Caldwell returns from Washington D C where she attended the national convention of the Daughters of 1812 and urges Canton to form an auxiliary to the Navy League to knit mufflers wristlets and sleeveless packets for sailors. A large league could earn a ship for Canton. even a submarine would be assigned with few members. Coarse gray yarns are supplied at cost and members have three months to complete the three items with provided directions.

Canton women plant an acre to aid U S government

The Faith and Duty guild of the First Congregational church in Canton began planting an acre near Massillon on Jackson lane. Profits benefit the church while the effort supports national food programs. D L Tschantz of Canton Buggy Co arranged the ground. 50 members share onion and potato tasks. Rockefeller interests take control of the Wheeling & Lake Erie and plan a Washington to Chicago system linking with the Nickel Plate and Western Maryland. Auto overturns on Alliance road injuring three

Three men escaped death when a closed car turned over four miles west of Alliance at 4 p m Monday. Driver Edelman and two salesmen were hurt by glass and broken ribs. They were pulled from the wreck by a following East Palestine manufacturer and taken to Dr Stans office. The other car sped away after the collision.

William Johnson, a Black man held on murder and recently returned after 17 months outside, receives a warm welcome from warden, chaplain, and fellow trusties at the Ohio penitentiary. He had already served 13 years of a life sentence, with Deputy Sheriff Ehman present for the transfer.

In September 2014 the company announced it would not raise prices amid a weak industrial mood. Beginning with meter readings in May 2017 the price will be 37 cents per MCF with a 2 cent discount for timely payment. Missing Gunners Feared Dead After Vacuum Sink

London May 1 Little hope was held out for the crew of the torpedoed American oil steamer Vacuum including a U S Navy lieutenant and nine American gunners. No 1 lifeboat crowded by survivors and high seas awaited details of the attack. The party aboard the lifeboat included the chief mate and 17 men, three gunners, and Captain S B Harris as master. The Vacuum sank quickly with no time to defend against the U boat. the American consul general will aid survivors.

Joffre Invited 10 Canton Visit By Canton Chamber

The Canton Chamber of Commerce through Rep Roscoe Mc Culloch invites the French war mission led by General Joffre and M Viviant to visit Canton on their Western USA itinerary en route to Cleveland Chicago. Officials hope they come from Cleveland Wednesday and arrangements are to be finalized by Mc Culloch. The chamber executive committee approved the invitation at Monday's meeting.
