A photograph shows British soldiers in dug in the trenches as cooks ready the evening meal. Food is boiled on small fires and carried to the firing line in pairs through connecting trenches. Men receive beef and beans along with varied rations and tea or coffee brewed in the trenches.
May 1 dispatches report four British armies pressing Turkish forts at the Dardanelles while the Queen Elizabeth leads Anglo French bombardments on both European and Asiatic shores. Turkish losses mount as transports are sunk and redoubts stormed. troops sing as they advance amid heavy shellfire.
May 1. German shelling of Dunkirk began at dawn along the coast near Westende Belgium. A fifteen year old girl among the few casualties from a shell impact. A German air presence was observed over the town at about 590 feet but no bombs dropped. The barrage continued with alarms and urgent searches as authorities assessed damage.
The forecast calls for hot air tonight and Sunday with temperatures around 55 to 67 degrees. Expect variable conditions with lighter winds and possible humidity.
In Columbus on May 1 two unusual bills were introduced to State Senator Lloyd of Franklinco. One, by a 70 year old man, seeks removal of all trees on the Statehouse grounds to expose the capitol from view. A woman delivered a placard presenting a bill allowing any job seeker refused by five employers to sue the employers.
City Engineer Sarver announced plans to request about $50,000 more to finish West Park improvements before the current $50,000 1913 appropriation is exhausted. Earlier estimates showed total costs exceeding $206,000 for reclaiming land, beautification, roadways, and bridges. Remaining funds after grading will finance a Tuscarawas to 12th Street NW roadway with a small bridge and a Tuscarawes to Gil Street SW link, with any excess for fill.

Attorney George H. Clark and W. L. Alexander, noted real estate authorities, were appointed by the county tax board to equalize land values of downtown Canton properties and certain residence districts. They will be paid ten dollars per day, with a clerk at five dollars daily to assist, and work is expected to last about six weeks starting Monday.
About 200 workers from the union plumbers and helpers failed to show for Saturday work as talks on a new wage scale proceed. They seek 4.50 for eight hours first year 4.75 second year and 5.00 third year while master plumbers refuse to meet. A meeting between unions and employers is planned in the next few days.
Insurance appraisers work to assess fire and water damage at the Courtland hotel. Carpenters place a temporary roof over the burned section to protect from rain while a permanent cover is planned. Carpets were sent to laundries for cleaning and are believed largely unharmed. Canton club quarters on the seventh floor suffered ceiling collapse and water damage from the fire and firefighting actions.

Canton council favors creating a city building department to oversee plumbing electrical wiring and construction inspection. The plan aligns with Mayor Stolberg and a building committee report after reviewing practices in Youngstown. Officials expect a three week report with considerations to fund by fees benefiting homeowners and builders.
Canton city records show a strong rise in building activity in the first four months of 1915 with 225 permits valued at 476 295 compared with 135 permits totaling 292 100 for the same period in 1914. April 1915 also set a record, with 98 permits for 218 520 versus 56 permits for 107 100 in April 1914. A weekly total of 26 permits was issued, and the complete list will be published Sunday.
Beijing reports say China handed its final reply to Japan's ambassador Dr Hioki via Foreign Minister Lu Chen Hsiang. The message flatly rejects the Japanese demands, asserting they would amount to a virtual surrender of China's sovereignty.
Gov Willis announced a statewide observance of Mothers Day on Sunday May 9 urging all residents to wear white flowers and display national colors on public buildings. He urged mayors to promote wide observance honoring mothers living or dead.
Summit County grand jury indicted L Oscar Beck and Warner Hamlin on manslaughter charges tied to reckless driving in Akron on Jan 31. Mrs Wilda S Fife died from the crash. others injured include Ruth Irwin, Robert McConnell, Frances and Marsene McKean, and Louis Dumont. Beck is ex mayor Sawyer's son in law. Hamlin is son of Motz Tire & Rubber Co head.
