Canton workers and volunteers haul and pile rubbish amid a city wide clean up campaign. John Dine reports hauling will extend into next week as schools and foreigners aid in the effort. Kent calls the campaign a big success with progress across northeast and southeast districts.
Canton residents face extra fares within the city limits as the Northern Ohio Traction & Light Co plans a franchise and rail work. Officials cite disparities with Akron and Greentown routes and promise a Saturday meeting with N O T. manager Charles Currie to discuss conditions and possible limits on Fultonard extensions.
Tonight frost in the lowlands with cooler weekend ahead. Ads promote a player piano by Klein & Heffelman Co with easy payments. Dana Quartet at First Christian church and City Auditorium at 9 30. Romilly Boys choir concert at U B church tonight with tickets 50 and 25 cents. Bible school overflow to be taught by W T Fisher in the auditorium.
Fire damaged the McLain Co. and Garwood Co. factories with water-logged motors delaying operation recovery. State Fire Marshal Defenbaugh has not yet reported. a deputy is expected soon. Local officials cautioned no statement on loss until appraisers arrive. Other notes include a Mexican mediation remark, a saloon vote result in Agosta, and upcoming train time changes and ads.
Non union heaters at Carnahan Tin Plate and Sheet Co face dismissal if they do not join the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers by Friday. Union officials warn they will send agents to hire replacement workers if needed, while General Manager J. H. Himes says mills will be ready to operate by Monday at 4 PM unless the dispute is settled by 10 AM that day.
United Mine Workers blame John D. Rockefeller Jr for the Colorado coal strike deadlock. Miner leaders say arbitration would have worked if operators and government had agreed. The union insists on recognition as a key issue and notes operators refused talks since September.
Canton will receive about four additional saloons when licenses are distributed next fall by the county licensing board. Witter and Dougherty said population growth since 1910 warrants four new licenses, with location limited to the business district. A Madison Avenue saloon move to Cherry Avenue was denied.
A dated United Press dispatch from Vera Cruz reports chaos after the American marines landed. Americans fled Mexico City amid jeers while cable messages relayed the arrival and fighting, as residents and officials scrambled to verify developments.
A Pacific Mail steamship Siberia with 500 plus aboard is ashore near Samasuna close to Formosa. Wireless messages are garbled and aid ships Minnesota and Yarmouth are en route. Possible pirate action suspected though exact position and status unclear. Passengers include Mrs Francis Burton Harrison and Mrs John B Renters.
A United Press report from San Francisco says the liner Siberia ashore near Formosa. The Minnesota of the Great Northern line has been sent to aid the distressed vessel. The Siberia carried 600 first class passengers 50 second class and 250 steerage plus 304 crew. Disembarkations were in progress en route.
