Frosty weather hammered the Stark area with sleet and snow lowering temperatures below freezing. Early peach buds may be damaged while pear and plum buds show sensitivity though full apple bloom is two weeks away if more cold snaps do not follow. Some minor damage to early garden vegetables is also noted.
Reports from across Ohio indicate frost and freezing temps damaged fruit crops in southern counties. Peaches plums pears and cherries in bloom suffered. some areas like Ottawa County saw undamaged fruit and potential for a later crop if wet weather allows sprays. Northern Ohio fared better with limited damage.
Fair tonight and Wednesday in Ohio with warmer temperatures. Events include a Lodge of P behind K of P seven members tonight and four Wednesday evening. Also announces Canton Business College classes start next week and a big jewelry sale from Merrity Jewelry Co with window advertisements.
A Cuban styled peddler arrived with thousands of what he called alcoholic beans. He demonstrated in a hotel room using water turned whiskey colored by the beans. Patrons bought them at a dollar each, but police seek the man and his helper for selling diluted alcohol as liquor.
A blast at the Joseph Weil Paper Co. plant in Chicago's Bloody Nineteenth ward killed at least six and injured about sixty, with fire follow up and police investigating gas leak or bomb as possible causes. Coroner Hibman estimated deaths could rise to ten and injuries to around sixty as rescuers pulled mangled bodies, including a three year old girl, from the ruins. The scene prompted mass panic, shattered windows, and improvised hospitals as authorities searched for further victims and locals aided the injured.
State Highway Commissioner A R Taylor and county officials J Frank Booth H N Firestone Adam Jackman and County Survey George L Sickafoose face contempt charges filed by William J Betz before Judge Day. An April 7 hearing was set to answer the injunction breach regarding surface water from the Lincoln highway directed onto Betz's East Canton Robertsville area farm. The officials deny responsibility citing state takeover of the road. Amerman Mills represent Betz.
The Thayer Military band hosts a free public concert in the Auditorium on Wednesday evening. Tickets issued allow band members to invite friends, but admission is open to all. Highlights include Karl L King’s Fame and Fortune and Rossini’s William Tell overture with solo Spanish dances by M Moszkowsky.
Amelia Smith of Massillon won a $550 verdict Tuesday against John B. Tynan after a four day jury trial before Judge Day. Mrs. Smith, who assisted her son in butchering at a home south of Massillon, was injured when his Ford collided with Tynan's car as zero degree wind chills and steam from a radiator caused limited visibility.
Canton Mattress Co advertises 704 Tusest FE as mfg of mattresses pillows and cushions. It offers renovation and remake of mattresses husk and fillings sold by the pound and ticking by the yard. Also promotes lawn time sale and lists Bell phone 247 State 434.
New York news reports John Burroughs famed naturalist died at 2 a.m. on a train returning from California to his West Park New York home. Telegram from Dr Clara Barrus to Dr Walter Crump in Buffalo indicates death occurred shortly before reaching Buffalo. The body to be brought to Poughkeepsie.
The naturalist John Burroughs died after leaving Chicago for Poughkeepsie to celebrate what would have been his 84th birthday. Friends were to meet his body in Poughkeepsie. Notable visitors Ford Firestone and Edison had planned a floral Park celebration.
Mrs. Glatino Vito of 322 11th St SE saved seven people in her home fire caused by a defective flue. She blocked one blaze entry with paper and used water to quell the flames at a second opening, preventing injury to her blind husband and four grandchildren. A fire department denial followed as her bravery kept the family safe.
Richwood West Virginia March 29 bandit raid on a lumber camp north of Richwood left one Russian laborer dead and about $18 000 stolen from 20 men quartered at Camp 66 of the Cherry River Boom and Lumber Co. Bloodhounds failed to follow the trail after an all night search.
The Canton Chamber of Commerce industrial committee plans a survey to identify industries needed to supply local manufacturers with materials. C R Jamison chairs the committee with C G Herbruck as vice chair. Luetht says locating essential industries will complete the supply circle and boost the citys industrial progress.
Members of the local American Legion post will hold a smoker and informal entertainment after the regular meeting on Friday night. Ex servicemen from Canton and Stark counties are invited to attend and lunch will be served. Memorial Day observance plans will be discussed at the 7 30 pm meeting, moved up from 8 o clock, and a Strand dansant dance is set for April 14.
A. C. Blinn, general manager of the N. O. T., did not visit the county commissioners in Canton. The board has sent two letters requesting information on when the company will move its tracks on the Canton Mas Silloard, but has received no response. They believed he would meet them at the start of the week and were surprised he did not contact them.

Mary Conley claims she became the wage earner of the household after marrying Russell Conley last April. She says since the marriage she bought all her clothes and paid most household expenses except part of the rent while he pursued other women. Attorneys Amer man & Mills represent her. The notice also mentions local ads and business moves.
Burglars smashed a large plate glass pane on Fourth-st side of the Spring Holzworth store on Market avenue North and stole a mole skin coat worth 295 dollars. Mrs. C Maddox alerted police. A similar burglary at John Kocius’ store occurred Monday night with a window broken and three pairs of shoes taken. A diamond ring and cameo brooch set with pearls were stolen from Mrs. Anna Hayden’s home.
Berlin reports say communist clashes with security police at Essen and Leipzig left fourteen dead and forty six wounded. Ring leaders plot uprisings to strike and sabotage electric plants as troops concentrate to defend Berlin amid rising tensions.
At a police court preliminary hearing on Tuesday Peter Spira Amadio Scarcella and Gregore Tiberio were held to the grand jury without bail on a first degree murder charge in the March 19 killing of Ermine Duva at Pennsylvania Station. Examinations concluded after witnesses for the state were heard and the defense called its witnesses. A woman connected to the case was released.
Stockholders at the fifth annual meeting and banquet of Canton Associates Realty Co elected KE L Gehman F S Crawford George R Hinton Charles Cogan and J L Allman as directors. A six percent dividend was declared on stock issued before February 28 1921.

Greek troops on the Anatolian front have pushed 40 miles toward Angora after seizing Eski Shehr, with Turkish prisoners and matériel in custody. They stand about 130 miles from Angora, with Katafa and Saki Shehr noted as key Baghdad Railway junctions.
