Seagraves, a town of 600 in Texas, was left in ruins after a fast spreading blaze destroyed most homes and business houses. Loss was estimated at 500000 with only the telephone exchange hotel and bank remaining standing.
Marie Terwilliger a 19 year old Walkill telephone operator was shot at the village exchange. Postmaster Harry McHugh 32 sought by pursuers after the murder and accused of entering the building berating and fatally wounding Miss Terwilliger. Jesse McHugh 21 brother to suspect reportedly had quarrel over the girl and bought her a diamond ring.
The Canton Daily News announces a district wide spelling bee for all seventh to ninth graders across Stark Tuscarawas Holmes and Wayne counties. Over 15 000 pupils from more than 200 schools compete for four free trips to Washington in June with a final in Canton in late May.
