Samuel L. Richards of Canton, a coroner candidate and creditor of Maciej Asses, was arrested in Chicago on embezzlement charges involving several hundred dollars from the estate. He left Canton two weeks ago. Norwood was informed, a warrant issued, and Richards plans to return with a deputy to face charges.
Mayor Stolberg warned that every railroad crossing in Canton must be repaired within 24 hours of city notification or the city will perform the work and bill the responsible company. An inspection of the 6th street Wheeling & Lake Erie crossing prompted the move as planks were loose or missing. Safety officials will survey all crossings while the city seeks lumber for repairs and may involve the state utilities commission if needed.

CHICAGO March 24 Mrs C W Stockwell adopted her husband's unborn child and has also taken in the baby's mother after she was driven from her home by the girl's father. Stockwell said her husband confessed his faithlessness and influenced her stance toward him and the mother and child. She spoke of forgiveness and the hope that the girl becomes a good woman so their son will understand his real mother when the time comes.
News dispatches from San Antonio and El Paso on March 25 describe Maj. Gen. Funston ordering strengthening of the border patrol amid bands of Mexican marauders. Carranza forces reportedly consider sending an expedition into the U.S. near Presidio to recover cattle thieves pursued to the border. Villa is said to have escaped pursuit with his Coloradoos into the Sierra Madre south of the Rio de Santa Maria valley.

Canton clubwomen plan to cooperate with the Playground association this year. Several clubs appointed committees to prepare the playgrounds for opening and supervise operations until paid staff arrive. W. W. Worcester led enlistment of women. Athens club named Mrs. H. White, Mrs. Homer Krause, Mrs. Hugo Gephardt and Mrs. C. Price to a cooperation committee.
At a Canton medical society meeting, members opposed R W Pratt's proposed reservoir without expert hydrological approval. Dr C E Schilling warned of stagnation and infection risk, questioning fire and pressure benefits. They favored the Chamber of Commerce plan to bring in an independent expert. Dr Gavin spoke on business phases of a doctor's life. A new aeroplane by George Lithorpe of Marblehead was patented.
Berlin reports Verdun set ablaze by German artillery with many shells hampering troop and ammunition transport to the firing line. War office in Berlin confirms the incident amid other routine notices.

Six defendants arrested in a Canton raid on alleged fortune telling and spiritual advising faced arraignment. Anna Rees and Sarah Reese pleaded guilty to unlicensed practice with suspended fines, while others pleaded not guilty or denied fortune telling. Trial set for Tuesday.
