In Massillon on March 24 Superintendent H. B. Gorrell ordered all schools closed at noon due to widespread influenza. They will reopen April 5 after an extended Easter vacation, with hundreds of pupils absent and many teachers sick or caring for ill colleagues.
Five year old Sofron Beldean of 744 Carnahan Ave NE was killed when a sand truck struck him at 7th Street and Belden NE. The driver R Mc Eldowney of Edgefield RD 7 was detained as investigators, with coroner McQuate, probed the accident. The child, who had lived in Canton three years from Alba Tulia Romania, was en route from Belden School kindergarten. Funeral plans are pending.
Civil Service Commission hearing in Lengel reinstatement case shifts as detective H J Burton reveals federal interest in a Canton liquor conspiracy. Burton testifies about past cases including Ruth Hunter murder and names entities in Canton including McCan Mather Co and Louis Griffiths employers. Cross examination covers aliases and dates from 1920 to 1924 and reports to Gauchat.
Strawberries from English hot houses on sale in London at seven dollars a pound. The market reports high prices and strong demand as the new crop reaches retailers.
R. C. Banker of Middletown Ohio admits to Union Gas and Electric officials and Chief Raymer that he single handedly robbed the gas office vault of three thousand dollars on March 20. No arrest warrant yet signed.
Police search for a man who attacked and killed 96 year old Mrs. Louise Lehrke of Manister Michigan. Her body was found on a bed with torn clothing and a fractured skull. a second strike and a trugle mark were found in another part of the house which had been ransacked.
The Racing News Bureau in Newburg Heights, a hub for track gambling, was ordered closed today by Safety Director Barry. A new Cleveland ordinance takes effect April 11 banning tips on horse races.
Josiah V. Kirby, ex-head of the Cleveland Discount Co., is sentenced to seven and a half years in Atlanta federal prison and $7,000 in fines by Judge John M. Killits after convictions on fourteen counts of mailing fraud. Kirby had four prior trials in Cuyahoga County and two in federal court. He had a new trial motion denied and faces separate indictments for approaching prospective jurors, with June 14 set for trial.
Martha Kennon an 18 year old from Union City Indiana died after poisoning herself and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton Ohio. Police seek a man who brought her to the hospital and refuse to disclose his identity as they investigate why she took the poison.
James Kingsmore, jailed after a wife beating conviction, petitions to stop Sheriff John E Potee from administering five lashes. He argues the sentence calls for a forty five lash total due to misinterpretation of a thirty inch cat o nine tails with nine lashes of twenty four inches each.
Private funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 PM for Dick B. Bruun 40, head of Advantage Loan & Discount Co. and the Dick Bruun Co. Ford Lincoln agency, who died Monday night by self-inflicted gunshot at Crystal Lake. Motive remains a mystery.

Athens officials plan to arm police with five foot long poles studded with large nails to deter drivers who ignore slowing signals. Officers are instructed to use full discretion to strike tires when necessary to enforce speed limits.

Mobile Alabama announces a state led project to erect one of the Souths largest cotton warehouses. General William L Sibert says the brick and concrete facility will be about 900 feet long and 230 feet wide and tied to new docks. Completion is expected by summer to aid fall export cotton movement through Mobile Harbor.
New York broker J F Weissenfluh details a trip to the Far East and an Arab wedding in Egypt. He says the dancing was tame compared with Broadway shows and that American chorus girls could teach Oriental dancers a few tricks.
Cleveland March 24. The spring fishing season on Lake Erie was formally opened today as eight fishing tugs steamed out to drop nets for perch and pike.

London dispatch reports Britain’s advisory to the department that the Canadian Pacific Line plans a new steamship service with vessels of the Princess type between New York and the Bahama Islands and Bimini off the Florida coast.
Chicago men reputed national figures in the moving picture industry are under surveillance as District Attorney Asa Keyes announces the Desmond Taylor murder is solved. Keyes says the killer’s name is known but cannot be published until an arrest is made, with three women to be questioned in Los Angeles.
In Jerusalem on March 24 the Jewish press notes crime rose from 11,098 cases in 1921 to 16,833 in 1925 including 614 heinous offenses. It warns that disbanding the British Gendarmerie and moving troops to Egypt endangers public security with only 1,000 police and 500 gendarmes for a population near a million.
