A massive tornado in Terre Haute Indiana devastates the region destroying Perth and Prairietown. Eighteen dead and about 75 injured as rescue crews comb through 500 homes for more victims. Refugees are housed in two school buildings while volunteers aid the wounded.
A tally from the latest reports lists confirmed deaths and injuries from the tornado. Officials say rescue teams continue searching affected neighborhoods as the toll rises and emergency services mobilize across impacted counties.
Relatives in Canton anxiously await news from Omaha after a devastating tornado. Miss Jessie KR Davis, a Canton native now in Omaha, is listed among the dead. Wires are down, hindering family attempts to confirm the fate of other known Canton residents in the affected belt.
Des Moines reports say Omaha was struck by a tornado that devastated 47 blocks. Medical aid was sent by special trains with doctors and nurses, one leaving at 6:45 a.m. and another at 7:30 a.m. Many injured were moved to Council Bluffs as wires to Omaha were down. Numerous Cantonians and Terre Haute residents with ties to Omaha or Canton are mentioned as being in or connected to the affected area.
Gov Morehead Mayor Dahlman and Police Commissioner J Ryder report Omaha's death toll may exceed 200 in the storm path including Ralston and Council Bluffs. Eighty known dead in Omaha. City establishes relief fund of 25000 and sets up six relief stations while drugstores assist and militia aids search for victims in ruined districts.
A. H. Brooks of American Telephone and Telegraph states one wire remains into Omaha from New York since 7:45 a.m. New York time. The line is exclusively held by United Press to disseminate news to the country, government officials, and nearby states, prioritizing public need over company use.
Washington reports Chief Moore of the weather bureau attributes Omaha’s deaths to a violent local wind storm or tornado from Sunday afternoon. He notes warnings issued for shifting gales as the great lakes storm moves southeast and lists historic storms with high death tolls and losses, clarifying Galveston 1900 was not this class.
The tail of the tornado struck the outskirts of Council Bluffs and latest reports today give the total death list as eight. There were 17 persons known to be injured by falling walls and the property damage is estimated at $200,000. From 10 to 15 persons are dead else where in the state of Iowa, as the result of last night's storm. Six were killed at Woodbine. Several deaths were reported at Craig, Iowa, over the telephone this morning, but wire communication had not been restored.
