Canton's sixth annual style show drew thousands as fireworks lit the sky and store windows glowed with elaborate decorations. Merchants joined the spectacle, crowds filled Market and Tuscarawas streets, and curtains rose at 7 30 p m to reveal fashion displays across downtown shops.
Mrs Amy KE Renkert fifty wife of J J Renkert head of The Royal Brick plant died in Mercy hospital after her clothing caught fire at home. Found semi conscious by husband Wednesday after returning from town her clothing burned from her body. Family believes a stove accident sparked the blaze as she dressed for shopping. Survived by Harry Renkert treasurer and general manager O W Renkert vice president and general superintendent and Mrs J D DesPrez stepchildren.
Allies push beyond Chauny and Ham, reaching within five miles of St. Quentin as the German front line eyes a retreat. The advance marks renewed pressure along the Hindenburg Line with Allied forces moving rapidly toward key positions in northern France.
Reports from Washington say Germany proposed mediating between the United States and Great Britain today, provoking sharp anger in official circles. The offer is described as a deliberate insult and could widen existing differences between the nations.
In a preliminary hearing Judge Quinn bound W Fulton over for grand jury on a concealed weapons charge after Fulton testified he drew a pistol during a reported hold up in the southwest district.Utterbeck pleaded guilty to carrying a gun but the court allowed a not guilty plea and discharged him.
Pete Marwich a Serbian man was bound over to the grand jury on a murder charge after a fatal shooting at a boarding house. Mike Florich, owner of the boarding house at 2423 13th St NE, was fined $500 and costs for liquor sales in the house where the killing occurred. Pint, who was shot, died at Mercy Hospital a few hours after being found barely alive with a large wound to the abdomen. He gave police a statement before dying.
Patriotic groups greet returning Eighth Ohio infantry including Canton and Alliance companies. The train from Fort Benjamin Harrison is due Friday. bands and societies meet the troops at Pennsylvania Station and Wooster bells sound nine nine nine. A parade up Market Street to the Auditorium follows a banquet for the company and families.
Delegation of 35 Rotarians and wives attended the district rotary meet in Wheeling West Virginia. The board advertised bids for a 190000 dollar bond issue. Police fined 15 drivers for traffic violations with sentences suspended upon compliance. Julius Rosenwald donated 1 million to Jewish relief and German warnings of war framed the mood as nations prepared for conflict.
