Floods ravaged southern Alabama and other states causing widespread damage and many deaths. Rescue efforts by Red Cross, National Guard, and volunteers used airplanes and boats as towns flooded and transport collapsed.
Washington March 16 The Red Cross national head quarters ordered all chapters to keep reserve relief workers ready for emergency calls to flood relief. No general call expected but preparedness urged as floods threaten Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa Missouri and surrounding areas. East coast conditions worsen with Albany observers predicting the worst floods since 1913 as rivers rise.
Canton attorney James A. Rice, who suffered a severe heart attack after a city council meeting while serving on the transportation commission, was moved Friday from Aultman Hospital to his home at 1220 Market Ave N. His condition had been extremely serious for days. Also updating is Henry Weber of Weber Dental Chair Mfg. Co., whose brain concussion from a fall on ice shows improvement per hospital report.

Dublin March 1 The Irish Free State leader praised the United States for proposing a warless world order and said Ireland accepted the peace treaty as an original party. He noted U.S. goodwill, urged Americans of Irish blood to boost support, and called for breaking down barriers of misunderstanding between Europe and America.
Billie Berger age five suffered head and body lacerations when a hit skip driver struck him near the intersection of Tuscarawas Street East and Hartford Avenue. His sister said the car turned south on Hartford from Tuscarawas. He was taken to Little Flower Hospital in fair condition. Two others also injured in separate bicycle collisions.
Canton Ohio. George Thompson a 38 year old prisoner in the Franklin county jail serving a 30 day sentence for defrauding an inn keeper walked away Friday with two days left in his sentence. He fled while helping carry milk at 5 30 am running through an alley and vanished. He wore a dark blue suit and both hands bandaged from finger infections. Detainer awaited him over bad checks in Cleveland.
Frank E. Angel owner of Mt View Park returned to Fair ay NE from White Cross Hospital Columbus after having four goitres removed. The March 16 report notes his successful surgery and his plan to resume duties at Mt View Park.
Pearl M. Morley chief probation officer of Stark County Juvenile Court spoke to the Canton Exchange Club detailing court operation and the progress among delinquent youths and family rebuilding through the court. She described experiences with delinquents their crime types and methods while the meeting was directed by Dr. Gauchat and Charles Fromm. The program for next Friday will be arranged by William H. Gray and Jay L. Goodin.

Alexander Bierce Clark 55 prominent Canton businessman and civic leader died Saturday at Aultman Hospital following an operation. president of Canton Art Metal Co. and director at several firms, he aided hospital expansion, library drives, and community funds. survived by wife Faith Fogle Clark and children Alexander Jr Roger Faith Marian Marcia Marian. brother W W Clark and sister Mrs J S Shanks.
Fitchburg Mass March 16 Charles H Scott 39 an electrician and churchman shot and killed his two children Elizabeth 9 and Richard 6 after wounding his wife Frieda 37 seriously and attempting to kill another child Then he killed himself with a shotgun at his home The dead include Elizabeth and Richard and Frieda is in serious condition at Burbank Hospital.
Geneva March 16 The commission of jurists completed revision of the Permanent Court of International Justice statutes to permit United States entry. The final report on the revisions, patterned on Elihu Root proposals and amended by Sir Cecil Hurst, will be adopted Monday. The Root changes replace Article IV of the 1926 court project concerning advisory opinions.
Maj. Gen. T. Q. Ashburn, chairman and chief executive of the Inland Waterways Corp, is expected to be retained by the Hoover administration. The War Department will decide his future, with no change anticipated for now. His indeterminate term and special rank set him apart from other major generals.
Capt Ira Eaker began a dawn to dusk flight from Brownsville to Panama, 1960 miles away, in the Pan American P-12. He aimed to prove US Army air delivery speed with seven refueling stops including Tampico Minatitlan Guatemala City Managua and David Panama, planning later landings in San Antonio and Washington.
City employes under civil service may face a several day delay in receiving March pay due to the appointment of H. B. Grove as new civil service secretary. Payrolls must be approved by the secretary before payment action by the city auditor and treasurer. Grove has not opened his office, delaying payroll submission and signings. Treasurer Hill reported heavy inquiries about when payrolls would be ready.
Massillon report says Andy Gotzhmer pleaded not guilty to possession of intoxicating liquor and was released on a $1200 bond. A hearing is scheduled for Monday at 9 30. William Kerkillis pleaded guilty to possession, was fined $200 and costs.
The Maritza River rose rapidly flooding hundreds of homes in eastern Bulgaria. Many buildings collapsed and residents fled to high ground as military authorities joined relief efforts in Philippopolis, a city of about 42 000 people located on both riverbanks.
James Lamont, 27, alias Leo Benedict, wanted in Cleveland for the slaying of Patrolman Carl Sherman on March 6, was arrested in Mt. Clemens by Deputy Sheriff Ray Busch. Lamont is held awaiting Cleveland officers. a 26 year old woman, claimed as his wife, was released after questioning.
In Wooster Ohio on March 16 the jury of five women and seven men pondered whether Melvin Horst the missing Orrville boy was abducted by Elias Arnold and his son Arthur. The panel heard closing arguments from Prosecutor Mougey and defense counsel and faced four possible verdicts with a potential 20 year sentence if guilty.
David Grigsby of Canton sues Mineral City village for 500 plus interest claiming the village never assumed two $250 notes issued in 1898 and has paid no 6 percent interest since 1907.
A rare mid spring thunderstorm struck Canton and surrounding area Friday evening, bringing loud thunder, vivid lightning, and a warm 66 degree afternoon before a drop to 40 degrees. The storm caused little damage but was noted as the season’s first official thunderstorm. Local observers mentioned toads emerging after the deluge. Radio reception was poor during the event.
J. Kr. Hillyer of UWhiichaville and two male companions escaped injury when the sedan they rode in left the road south of Midvale and rolled into a ditch. The car suffered little damage and all occupants were uninjured.
