A new business block will be erected in the fire zone this week by James Aungst one of the heirs. L W Kilgore Canton actor led the building act with a 69 day completion plan. The two story block will have 24 foot frontage and 95 feet depth. Sol Torowski and Harvard Clothing will occupy upper and lower floors.

Edward de Valera the Sinn Fein leader and Lincoln jail escapee was located near Dublin by a United Press reporter in a midnight interview. He warned violence would follow if the Paris peace conference fails to grant Ireland self determination and predicted continued revolution if rights are not recognized.
Wingate reports the county recorder’s office is flooded with discharge papers from veterans seeking to register for the $60 bonus. Thousands arrive daily. staff notes the need to transcribe data, collect a 25 cent filing fee, and return originals with the bonus check. Veterans are advised to obtain a Red Cross letter detailing required information.
Canton water works report shows 1915 operation expenses rose to a record due to material costs unsettled labor conditions and the war. Ohliger recommends installing a new 5 million gallon pump at Harrisburg Road station costing about 35000 to replace the inadequate current pump. Service Director DeCorps supports the improvement as clerks finish the annual report for submission.
Opposition leaders unveil a speech plan to urge opposition to the treaty as it enters the middle west border regions. Advocates argue amendments will shape ratification battles and influence public opinion.
United Press reports from Washington on March 12 describe renewed opposition to including a league of nations in the peace treaty. Senator Reed warned such linkage cannot be forced, while Democratic leaders caution that postulating a separate league would delay any effective outcome and turn the treaty into a mere scrap of paper.
Canton's citizen executive committee will discuss details of a soldier welcome and likely a city holiday at a 7:30 PM Saturday council chamber meeting. W. A. Lloberdier urged Mayor Poorman to proclaim the day as a holiday to honor Canton’s Own with a monster celebration including a banquet in the City Auditorium for more than 2,000 soldiers. The plan includes a prominent speaker and soldier talks, with seats reserved for families.
The first unit of the thirty seventh division sails for home with the 147th regiment of infantry mostly from Toledo area. The rest of the division will follow when ships are available aiming for a return by April 15 or May 1. The 47th regiment left Brest March 10 aboard the transport Harrisburg.
Two Cantonians, George F. King of the 136th Machine Gun Battalion and Samuel Cohn of the 16th Infantry, are listed among war casualties. Cohn died of wounds after being wounded in action, while King was reported missing, with family doubts over his death. King’s sister, Mrs. Ruth Frank, recalls telegrams from Christmas and a later message of death, though another brother recalls a hospital visit in France suggesting he may be alive. Cohn previously worked at Cohn Fish Market. his mother is Mrs. Sarah Cohn of Fifth Street SW. Mrs. Frank’s mother resides in Barberton. The notice notes official casualty lists and ongoing uncertainty surrounding King and Cohn’s fates.
Councilman William T. Kirk renews push for a Canton city building department modeled after Cleveland and Cincinnati to oversee all building activity. A current building commission would be superseded, with funding estimated at about 2500 dollars and plans to start after July 1.
Reports from Berlin dated March 11 12 describe ongoing fighting between Spartacists and government troops in eastern suburbs. Many executions follow Noske orders, with 150 plus captured police officers and soldiers killed, workers and railway workers joining the Spartacists, and 12000 Prussian officers serving with government forces. Progress planted its heel on the Metropolitan 5 to 50 cent store ad joining the First Trust and Savings bank building resulting in the store's Wednesday closure for an indefinite period. A condemned party wall between the bank and the adjacent store bulged three inches and must be rebuilt, with the store to reopen after safety work and special value sales announced.
