Police and fire departments will petition the city council Monday night for a ten percent salary increase citing higher living costs and rents. Officers now earn 1800 a year, with previous across the board raises and cuts labeled by fiscal years. If granted, the rise may be five percent now with a possible additional five percent later depending on costs.
City Auditor Barr announced the final tax settlement for the December collection totaling 388 187 46 with prior advances 481 689 68 making total receipts 869 877 14. Funds were allocated to General Public Safety Public Service Public Health Public Parks Public Library Judgment Fund Police Pension Firemen Pension Sinking Fund Special Assessments and Adjacent items for the first half of 1923.
The Ken dal Tire & Rubber Co plant in Massillon was bought at sheriff’s sale by State Senator Frank C. Wise for 26 670, the lowest allowed bid, after appraisals of 49 000 and two prior failed offers. The business will continue tire and tube production and may be sold to a rubber concern.

The appointment aims to safeguard estates of Romanian nationals who die in the United States and prevent dissipation claims. Bardash leads the Cleveland based Romanian newspaper America and is active in Romanian affairs in northern Ohio.

Chicago March 10. Logan Trust and Savings Bank closed by state auditors as investigators probe the death of Fred W. Popp 52 president. Found shot in his car on a country road near Chicago with a revolver nearby and $61,000 in checks drawn by his son Paul endorsed and cashed. The bank, long a family affair with Paul as cashier and Fred Jr as director, had been under secret state surveillance for a week. He left a widow and three children.

A massive fire at Fort Myer Virginia across the Potomac from Washington caused $100,000 in damage and fourteen casualties. Firefighters and Washington companies helped contain the blaze after it began in the barracks kitchen and spread through gasoline explosions. An investigation was ordered by acting Secretary of War Davis to determine responsibility and improve fire safety.
Miss Helen Hone of Canton staff at Western Union Telegraph may join a commission to aid devastated French regions. She could accompany Miss Edith Maude Burwell of New York as a national delegate. Myron T. Herrick presides. Anne Morgan is vice president. Local committee includes K. A. Kister, O. Baird, Bert Gray, and C. H. Lacey. Western Union will send two delegates from each territorial division.

Vernon Backman 14 of Salt Lake City is under Probate Judge Addie Nye Norton who has informed the boys’ parents, who refuse transport funds. The boys said they met in Cleveland and planned to seek their fortunes.

Columbus March 10 Governor Donahey named Mrs. William M. Miller Dresden as delegate to the National Congress of Mothers and Parent Teachers Association to be held April 23 in Louisville Kentucky. Mrs Miller is president of the Ohio branch and wife of former State Senator Miller.
