Smoke filled the McKinley hotel district when a meat market owned by the Schlosser brothers at 322 Market and the adjacent Grosjean furnace shop were damaged early Wednesday. Firemen, including Rubin and Falk, were overcome by smoke while extinguishing the blaze caused by crossed wiring under the ice box. Chief Mesnar urged city wiring inspections after estimating losses at about 500 dollars.

London reported the British torpedo boat destroyer Ariel rammed and sunk the German submarine U-20 today.
