Washington March 7. President Wilson announced the United States will arm ten American merchant vessels on his authority and send them to ports worldwide to ward off submarines and other wartime hazards to American commerce.

Pittsburg March 7 hogs reached the highest price in U S history on the stock market at 15 to 15 10 a hundred. Only six double deck cars carrying about 1000 hogs came in today. If no new arrivals occur soon the price may rise to 17 by next week. During the Civil War hogs sold locally at 14 dollars.
Senator Oberlin's measure to add a third resident judge for Stark County cleared the senate on Tuesday and moves to the house. Supporters from the Stark County Bar Association back the bill, which would elect another judge in 1918 if enacted, though adjournment pressure may delay action.
Kenosha Wisconsin March 7 Mat Ernst father says his mother Mary Ernst kept a nightly flame for twenty years awaiting his return. The lamp was extinguished when Mat’s body arrived from Sacramento California identified by one of his frequent letters. He left twenty years ago to seek his fortune and promised to return, a vow the mother honored with the burning light.
New York March 7 The food speculator remains active as vegetable prices fall, yet canned goods rise by four to nine cents a can over two days. East side housewives boycott continues, and merchants fear threats, forcing the mayoral food commission to seek east side suppliers willing to handle cost-priced beans rice and hominy.
Minneapolis dispatch reports Private Paul L. Scharfenberg of St Paul in the First Minnesota Infantry was sentenced to five years at Fort Leavenworth for furnishing military information to Germany. A letter claimed 10 million Germans in the U S were ready to rebel if war came, intercepted by British authorities. Scharfenberg, native of Germany, allegedly wrote predictions about President Wilson and U S troops on the border.
Big exhibition draws large turnout as doors open and crowds flow into the Cleveland district venue. Dealers expect attendance to surpass early estimates with entertainment and music playing a major role.
Tonight’s program features a souvenir night with a full Grand Army band concert lasting the evening. A battery of talking machines will run continuously as the band forms on the square at 7 30 pm and marches through Market to 6th street west to Cleveland avenue then south to the show building.
