Akron report says Martin Palmer and his wife died when a half broken colt they were driving plunged in front of a Baltimore and Ohio Chicago New York train at Barberton. Their four year old son Ralph was fatally injured. the horse survived. The buggy was dragged for many feet before the train was stopped.

Berlin reports German forces attacking American trenches in the St Mihiel sector took 12 prisoners and inflicted heavy casualties. The war office said they penetrated enemy trenches northeast of Leicheprey, with Leicheprey eleven miles east of St Mihiel and near Xivray, where Americans were taken in a prior raid.
The south draft board prepared to send 27 men and other Ohio contingents to Camp Greenleaf Ft. Oglethorpe Ga next Wednesday. Notification cards mailed. The American steamship Nyanza fought a German sub for 2.5 hours on January 13. Chief Gunner’s Mate Benjamin H. Groves reports the U-boat was sunk after the Nyanza took fire and returned fire, wounding an engineer cadet and prompting commendation from Secretary Daniels. Groves lists shots, damage, and crew details.
