By United Press New York March 2 the east in the grip of the worst blizzard since 1888 with seven deaths reported. Over 100 trains stalled, rail traffic paralyzed, telegraph and telephone lines down, and a biting gale driving 10 inch snowdrifts as storms crippled the region.
A forty mile gale hits Canton on Sunday afternoon driving people indoors and empty pews at night. The temperature drops to 7 above and one inch of new snow adds to slick streets. Coal supplies are said to be sufficient for a week, with ice harvests topping 50 thousand tons expected as warm weather returns.
In Winsted Connecticut on March 2 a local tale tells of a rabbit chased by a dog that escaped by rolling into a snowball and misleading the hound. The anecdote adds color to a day of wind and whimsy in the town.
