Detroit police moved to arrest suspected hijackers and extortionists linked to bootlegger crime as they probe the killing of August J. Nykiel the 33 year old west side rum baron last night with authorities matching possible motives to the violent payday.
Police report a third knife attack in a week as John Regis, 30, was slashed in the neck at 1019 Walnut NE. Nick Dejoy, 1419 Market and Dejoy, any relation, was bound over to the grand jury on a charge of cutting with intent to wound. Regis identified Dejoy at Mercy Hospital and the scene involved several witnesses and suspects in a broader gang-related case.
At the Democratic National Convention in Houston Sen. James A. Reed of Missouri was nominated by Charles M. Howell. The convention discussed platform planks on Prohibition enforcement farm aid and anti corruption as Gov. Smith of New York eyed the presidential nomination. Delegates faced heat long elevator lines and police kept order as talks continued.
Two former state dry agents Carl Seltzer and Frank Mullins were found guilty of conspiracy to violate the federal prohibition amendment in Columbus. They face sentencing Saturday after Judge Benson W. Hough overruled a motion for a new trial. Each man is held on property bonds under $10,000.

Miss Amelia Earhart along with Wilmer Stultz and Leo Cordon left Southampton amid cheers from passengers and dockside crowds aboard the transatlantic airship President Roosevelt for New York today.
The Cleveland Bar Association and local banks reach an agreement barring banks and trust companies from engaging in private legal practice. Canton officials acknowledge differences but consider the issue relevant. Urban A. In Houston on June 28 delegates from Mississippi North Carolina Tennessee Alabama and Georgia clashed over Gov. Alfred E. Smith stirring fights that ended without blood. The incidents marked a southern only disturbance with New Yorkers keeping clear as the Smith demonstration continued.
Despondency over illness and unemployment leads Ray Wolf to shoot himself with a .22 rifle in his Oakar Street home. He was found in a bloodstained bedroom by roomer Russell Agler and died later at Mercy Hospital. Four children slept nearby. Flora Wolf was away.
Samuel Anderson was killed when a rail road grade crossing collision in Cleveland left his wife and two children injured during the night.
Dr John Mac Lachlan of Cleveland flew to Hartford to treat seven months old Virginia Scofield with influenza. The infant, once deemed hopeless, is now reported out of danger after the swift air transfer to Brainard Field.
Hope grows that search can begin for 21 explorers missing after the Italia dirigible voyage near Spitzenbergen. Three groups of men have faced days of bad weather, with nine left on the ice and six aboard the craft, now unseen after a smoke signal appeared.
Capt. Frank T. Courtney, flying from Lisbon toward New York, reported progress near Horta in the Azores today. He aims to reach Halifax by sunset tomorrow after refueling, with backer E. B. Hosmer and crew including a mechanic and radio operator.
An unidentified souvenir hunter stole a suit of clothes a watch a pencil and $100 from the stateroom of Harry W. Lyon the American navigator of the Southern Cross as he returns to the United States on the liner Sonoma in Sydney New South Wales on June 28.
Chicago police announced four men will be charged with the murder of Big Tim Murphy. John Hand a Candy Jobbers Union business agent Frank Noonan James Forsyth and an unnamed man are named as the suspects. Deputy Commissioner O Connor says police have enough evidence to convict. Hand was arrested yesterday and remained silent. a loaded revolver with one chamber empty was found on him.
The North Star plane carrying Fraulein Thea Rasche was slightly damaged at Cap de la Madeleine Quebec as she prepared to depart for Newfoundland. An official from Fairchild Aviation Co. at Grand Mere Que. confirmed the incident by phone to United Press.
In Houston on June 28 Senator Pomerene moves for vice president as Joseph Breitenstein nominates him with a shortened speech. Mrs. Josephine Mae Gowan of Canton seconded the nomination. Ohio plans to back Pomerene then switch to Smith on the first ballot.
Five persons drowned and 26 reported entombed after a landslide caused by heavy rains near Hiroshima and Kyushu. Nationwide floods this month disrupted bridges roads and flooded rice fields as the rainy season continued.
