Prers June 20 A half dozen measures enacted by the recent state legislature take effect today. The laws require telephone systems to curb abuses while farmers gain protections for produce sales. Some provisions involve beer and soft drink regulations and room safety standards, with mixed economic impact noted across counties.
Denver June 20 John L Lewis president of the United Mine Workers announces candidacy for AFL president to succeed Samuel Gompers. The convention scene centers on campaign chatter while Irish questions and railroad ownership measures trigger hearings. Gompers supporters expect a 6000 vote margin if held now.
Washington reports predicted defeat for the Volstead beer ban as the bill faces sharp opposition in the House Rules Committee.(Dinwiddie Wheeler clash noted) Treasury Mellon orders swift issue of beer regulations allowing medicinal beer with a kick to be manufactured and sold pending action.
The Canton Home Co announces a twenty percent reduction on all refrigerators. An advertisement also promotes renting an Underwood typewriter with special student rates. Bell phone 113 appears in the ad along with a Masonic notice for a lodge meeting.
Dayton reports Rev. Lawrence Plank praising Georges Carpentier as a higher type in a children's sermon. He described Carpentier as having refined tastes, an appreciation for music, gardening, and flowers, arguing he should win over Jack Dempsey.
Steve Connerth a 42 year old cabinet maker in Alliance committed suicide by necktie early Sunday morning. He was found by his brother Dae Connerth after being unable to arouse him. Out of work since last November and confined to bed this past week by nervous affliction the act is attributed to despondency and temporary insanity. He lived with his mother at 716 Lindenay Avenue.
S C Martin and John Smith were found guilty of running a gambling house and fined 200 dollars plus costs after arraignment before Police Judge Bowman. Twenty others taken in the raid were each fined 5 dollars and costs. The 22 men were rounded up Thursday night in Courtay NW.
A legal notice references the Rotan Candy company alliance with amounts listed and entities including J. W. Linham Co and J. Oyster along with D. H. Rutledge and R. I. Rutledge linked to the matter.

Murphy, deserted by friends, remains jailed in default of 100000 dollars. Part of the loot was found in a trunk at his father in law’s home. Murphy claims he was holding it for someone.

Harry Poulos, a Greek, was held to the grand jury without bond after a Saturday arrest in Massillon. He faced a charge of shooting with intent to kill following a quarrel at a restaurant on Cherryay SE. Steve Standas, also Greek, remained in serious condition at Mercy hospital.

The Wower Co offices will be closed all day Saturday, June 25, for employees annual picnic.
Washington reports three American freight steamers missing off the mid Atlantic coast are now believed to have been seized by their crews and steered to Soviet ports. Two ships carried wheat and one sulphur, with details still unclear. A derelict, the Carol A Beering, was found adrift near North Carolina with no one aboard.
James Aungst handled his maiden case as assistant to Prosecutor Walter S Ruff. Sam Adams faced trial for highway robbery after John King testified he sheltered with him and Adams in a Tuscarawas shelter, where a knife robbery occurred. Adams claimed heavy drinking and no memory. Jury found him guilty on first ballot. Judge Day sentenced him to 1 to 15 years.
Four bandits in an automobile held up Fred Myers, messenger for the Mutual Trust company, and robbed him of $210,000 in cash near the bank. The incident occurred in Philadelphia on June 20.

A cloud burst in West Virginia causes widespread destruction across three counties. Six inches of rain flood crops, oil wells, and infrastructure. scores homeless with property losses around 300000 dollars. Separate incident near Sharpsburg and Letro positioned a damage estimate of 200000 dollars with bridges homes and tracks affected.
Five armed men robbed John Metro, driver for the American Railway Express Co., as payroll money from National Lead Co. was seized. They fled in a touring car with about $17,523. The incident occurred in Granite City on June 20.

Patrick J. Stanton 96 one of Canton’s oldest residents died at home 1100 McKinley Ave SW from old age. He opened Canton’s first contracting business and paved the first street here. He retired 25 years ago and his four sons continue the firm. Survived by four sons William John Walter Michael all Canton. daughters Catherine Walters Canton Anna Ashton Anchorage Alaska. three grandchildren and one great grandchild Wm Schultz Alaska. Funeral Wednesday at 9 am in St. Marys Catholic Church burial in St Johns Cemetery.
Working, at 1110 Fourteenth Street NW, chose a rival for a road race with Chief Harry Williams of the North Canton police. Williams accelerated, pursued the speeder as he passed, and his speedometer maxed at 60. Williams won the race south of the village, and Working was arrested and to be tried Monday evening before Police Magistrate J. J. Snyder.
Ohio authorities asked by Washington to locate relatives of 17 year old Edward Paterson held by Lingen municipal authorities in Germany. Kidnapped in 1913 by Mepsies and brought to Germany, he escaped in March and has been cared for at Lingen. Parents resided in Cleveland at the time of the theft.
The annual Ohio State conference of the Bricklayers Masons and Plasterers' international union opened in Steubenville with 60 unions represented. The session runs to Tuesday evening and will tackle the minimum wage scale and working conditions. New York laundry proprietor Harry Clark had his wife arrested for violation of the prohibition law after she refused to reveal her source.
Cambridge Ohio June 20 Paul D Bonnell became acting mayor after former mayor Jacob G Calvert was convicted Saturday of shooting Thomas McNeice with intent to wound Calvert announced plans to appeal. Tonight the council expected to fill the vacancy caused by Bonnell's promotion.
