Americans Hold Marne Bridge Against German Breakthrough

With machine guns in Chateau-Thierry windows, American forces on the Marne repelled repeated German attempts to cross. Units from Pittsburgh area veterans, under heavy fire, prevented pontoon crossings and blew the bridge to halt the advance as Lieut. John Bissell earned the French war cross for leading a relief of 300 French and U.S. troops.

Allies Drive Germans Back From Oise Front

Air battles grow more desperate as the war expands

U P correspondent William Philip Simms writes from the front in France on June 6 that aerial combat has intensified since May 14 as Allied and German air forces clash high above the battlefields. He notes heavy German losses, large bomb tonnages dropped behind lines, and bombings of Zeebrugge Mole and German targets, with hospitals behind Allied lines suffering severe casualties.

Denial of Canton Draft Reversals at Camp Gordon

Reports say 150 Canton men were not sent back from Camp Gordon after the draft. Canton boards noted a quota of 542 sent to Camp Gordon with only 12 returned for minor disabilities. Seven were underweight and two had flat feet. One underweight youth gained four pounds in four days and claimed another day could have pushed him past the required weight.

Stark county draft boards completed military registration on Wednesday with more than 1500 potential soldiers. Canton led with 931 registrants and Alliance followed with 368. Massillon area accounted for 348 in the western part of the county.

Canton Youths Respond to Army Camp Call

As Canton youths register a fresh call goes out for 2 000 more draft men to report to camp in the latter part of the month expanding the total draft for the month to 400 000. Cantons quota is not yet announced but several hundred men will depart for training camps this month.

Daniels addresses Naval Academy grads on German raids

Secretary Daniels told Annapolis graduates that Germany has intensified the war to the doors of the United States but cannot crush American resolve. He cited naval casualties to date 38 officers 629 men and noted 55 interned and seven captured as Ensigns prepare to serve aboard fighting ships.

Five new regiments and nineteen battalions of railway engineers to augment those in France are being completed under director of military railways 8 M Felton. When organized 50 000 American railway men will be on construction and operation work in France. One hundred sixty millions have been spent for supplies and equipment including 1 272 engines 22 630 freight cars 359 000 tons of steel rails. The nine original regiments selected from chief railway cities have been in France since August. The Chicago regiment renamed The Lucky Thirteenth landed in England on August 13 and received its first engine No 13.
