Massillon Man Murdered After Columbia Heights Card Game
Verne R. Rhodes thirty six of Massillon was killed Sunday night on the Tuscarawas river bridge in Columbia Heights Massillon by two unknown assailants following a gambling dispute. Rhodes and Thomas Hose had earlier played cards at a Columbia Heights resort and were returning home when two men attacked, one firing a pistol into Rhodes heart. Hose fled to telephone as the killers vanished. inquest and autopsy followed. Rhodes known as Jake, had recently won a gambling game in Cleveland Heights. Police sought two men a tall thin figure and a shorter heavier man. POMEROY: Wayne Lutz named to head city schools succeeding the late superintendent Coates.

Summit county officials hunted a Canton man for the killing of Levi Spitler, 71, a Greensburg area fruit grower. Spitler died after a head blow in a road near his farm following a quarrel over a wife. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 1:30 p m and 2 p m. Survived by wife and two sons.
