San Francisco July 30 reports say President Harding’s return to Washington is delayed as doctors assess his health after a digestive illness and exhaustion. The White House party expects a 10 day to two week delay before any attempt to travel, with plans adjusted accordingly.
Cleveland July 30 Evidence showed Patrolman Dennis Griffin was on duty when he was shot while escorting prisoner John Leon Whitfield Whitfield faces first degree murder charges Testimony described Griffin as armed with a Colt revolver and outlined the officer’s attire and routine in the May 11 incident The autopsy report presented by the defense was deemed correct by Dr P A Hammond
An Ohio River Valley tragedy summary reports 13 dead after two accidents in eastern Illinois and western Indiana. The Pennsylvania flyer collided with cars at Highland and Liggett while attempting to beat a train. Coroners planned full investigations. Names of victims include John Sezs and Joe Leygole from Highland and multiple Bostwick family members from Danville and Slavens of Terre Haute.
Berlin July 30. As Wilhelm Cuno became chancellor the mark stood at 60,000 to the dollar. Now more than 1,000,000 marks buy one dollar. Cuno's main pledge was Stabilization of the mark and economic stabilization.
The village of Holloway Ohio filed a $5,000 lawsuit alleging its newly laid Main Street paving failed to withstand use. Charles H. Rice laid the pavement and is named in the petition as the defendant in the claim for damages.
Perry County commissioners on Monday dismissed the Bailey road opening petition and granted approval to open Bolender road. Both routes are now usable but have not been officially accepted as public highways, enabling township trustees to proceed with improvements on Bolender road.
Rev. Ira D. Warner has resigned as pastor of the First United Brethren church in Canton effective Sept. 9. He announced the move to his congregation Sunday morning. Since arriving in Canton in 1917 from Oak Street United Brethren in Dayton, he supervised 6 years of growth with 1520 new members, debt liquidation, and property acquisitions. He is Otterbein College educated with a D. D. earned in 1919. Previously he led a church in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
On the eve of the Franco-Belgian reply to the British reparations note the Chronicle published a defense of Lloyd George's attacks on Premier Poincare. The reply is expected tonight or tomorrow and opposes German withdrawal from the Ruhr until reparations are paid and seeks end of passive resistance. Foreign office officials view the situation gloomily.

A Sunday afternoon blaze in Marketay near Canton destroyed the Wyler brothers barn. The fire caused about 5000 in losses including 20 tons of hay 50 bushels of oats and a carload of milk bottles. Spontaneous combustion starting in the haymow caused the fire and part of the loss is insured.
Mrs. Lillian Van Wicklen and Mrs. Pearl Stewart were each sentenced by Judge A W Agler in common pleas court to 1 to 20 years in the Marysville reformatory for women for kidnapping. Probation was denied and they were jailed pending transfer. Governor Donahey and parole board member Price Russell are involved in an appeal process.
A Lexington Ohio farmer arrives in town on a Saturday and discovers the shops closed for the Sabbath. He explains they are a day behind, then returns home with his wagon calves butter and eggs.
Five people died and twenty were injured in automobile accidents in and around Atlanta over the weekend. J. W. Hunt cotton buyer Henry Harris Grover Crow and Will McKinney farmers were killed when their car struck a tree near Gainesville. Six year old Etherline Pendley was killed in Atlanta when a car driven by her father collided with another.
Bobby Franks six is in critical condition after his clothing was ignited by matches. He was convalescing from a long illness when the accident occurred, and his entire body suffered burns.
Charleston West Virginia July 30 the board of public works announced a 1923 assessment rise totaling 6 615 626 47 dollars for public utilities. The increase reflects revised values approved by the state body.
Irene Castle Treman arrived in New York aboard the Lafayette denying Paris Seine court findings that she obtained a separation. She insisted she and Captain Treman remain married and said he would return on the Majestic to New York Wednesday.
Cleveland appears set to host the 1924 Democratic national convention as New York fades from contention after a poll of Democratic national committeemen. Other cities with perfunctory applications include Washington Baltimore St Louis San Francisco and Chicago.

Manuel Lopez, after three years teaching romance languages at Trinity College in Durham North Carolina, accepted the position as head of the department of Spanish at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Fire swept the main building of the Willow Street garbage disposal plant in Cleveland on Sunday. Loss is estimated at 55000 dollars.
Frank W. Stunmich of Dayton, who abducted Chief of Police M. B. Graham, waived examination and was bound over to the grand jury on an assault with intent to kill charge. Bond set at $2,000. He claimed he did not know his actions during the assault aimed at the mother in law Mrs. Harry Clark who he believed sheltered his wife who had left him. He bore a facial wound from capture near Miamisburg after the pursuit.
Alfred Hettinbach aged 12 and John Belletta aged 10 drowned in the swollen Lehigh River at Bethlehem. Hettinbach’s body was recovered after the youths swam with others and were drawn into a sheep hole.
Five armed bandits seized the West End Coal payroll of about 850000 on a southbound Laural Line limited train near Moosic. Edward Murphy, a Maloney Oil Co. worker, was killed. Conductor Gleason was unharmed as the robbers fled toward Moscow with the money, aided by an awaiting car. About 50 passengers witnessed the daylight heist.
Ephriam Howard of near Lima pleaded guilty to operating a still after deputies raided his farm milk shed uncovering a 25 gallon distillery. He said profits from grain crops vanished with falling prices and he turned to moonshining to save his farm from foreclosure. He posted $1000 bond and was released pending grand jury action.
WWB radio aired the final summer service from First Baptist Church. Rev. W E Bridge preached The Radio Voice, linking radio as Jesus gospel medium. WWB has broadcast nearly sixty church services during its operation.
Cleveland July 30. Charles L. Yermey, receiver, filed in federal court for appointment of three appraisers to value the real and personal property of the East Ohio Grocery Co. of Youngstown.

Atallo Rita a one year old son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Rita of 1220 Sandal pi NE died Monday morning in Mercy hospital from scalding suffered Saturday evening when a pan of boiling water spilled over his hips and legs. The accident occurred in the Rita home kitchen while the mother was away. She found the child on the floor with the pan on him, he lost consciousness Sunday evening and died at 7 Monday morning.
A three member committee in Cincinnati will personally invite Governor Deparey to head the Ohio State day at the Fall Festival. The group will then visit governors of West Virginia Virginia Tennessee Illinois Indiana and Kentucky to urge their attendance for a Governors Day event.
