Allied reports say American forces push toward Jaulgonne capturing prisoners and supplies while German divisions suffer heavy artillery pressure. The surge comes as uniforms parade and reports claim German base under fire with units depleted.
US agent to aid in pageant rent probe as Canton plans large patriotic parade. Senator Pomerene will speak at the opening of Cross Shops in the First Church. Local committees and Red Cross units prepare a major New Year event with marching bands and a Mary retreat ceremony.
A city patient refused admittance to Aultman hospital after officials said there was no physician available to see charity patients. Miss Alice HomeWay, superintendent, said no one could look after the woman, who was sent to another facility. Dr. Scott claimed a temporary staffing issue would be resolved by August 1 as doctors increase.
Draft quotas for moving 2,500 Ohio selects to Columbus bar racks on August 5 were announced by the state draft headquarters at Columbus Thursday. Twenty men will be sent from Canton and 27 from other points of Stark county, making a total of 47 selectmen to leave Stark county at this time. The north draft board will send nine men and the south board eleven.
Cologne Gazette notes German anger over prisoners who claimed the Entente would not attack on a given front. The paper calls the counteroffensive a surprise driven by tanks moving under cornfields, reflecting German viewpoint on wartime deception. Two Stark-county boys died on French battlefields per Thursday casualty lists. Canton’s IT H Bevan, 23, of 1521 12th St NE, served in the Canadian Engineering Corps. Alliance’s Francis E Williams, 22, Marine casualty reported June 6, with John Welsh of Lisbon also killed that day. Welsh’s death listed June 19. Bevan’s mother Mrs Elizabeth Mainwaring had not yet received notice by noon Thursday.
The Canton Holiness Association directs a tent meeting from July 26 through August 4 at the corner lithst and Park Ave SW. Rev John Fleming and brother Bona with his wife lead the events. The workers are described as spiritled and filled with singing. Attend for a feast of spiritual nourishment.

Artman Wertenberger, former Alliance school teacher, found guilty by a grand jury of improper relations with a girl pupil. Judge Robert H. Day sentenced him to two to ten years at the Ohio State Penitentiary in common pleas court Thursday afternoon.

London July 25 U P King George personally decorated Lieut. Commander A C Carpenter of the United States destroyer Fanning with the Distinguished Service Order at Buckingham Palace. The Fanning recently sank a German submarine and earned the first U-boat prisoners credited to the United States. Also notes a Masons event date change and a local real estate ad offering a five room modern home near the northeast end for 200 down and monthly payments of 26.60.
