Sunday drives more marriages and divorces than any day in Canton as probate and license records show. Mondays bring a flood of new licenses and suits with constructors of hurried ceremonies and legal actions following Sunday planning. Holidays also trigger large spikes as men seize a rare day off to wed.
Nineteen men die and about a dozen are injured in a Lake Erie waterworks tunnel blast. Rescue crews suffer losses while delays for helmets and safety gear hinder operations. Officials promise a thorough probe into the disaster and safety failures.
Sixteen year old Sheldon Sheets faced a manslaughter arraignment in county court Tuesday after admitting he struck and killed his stepfather George W. Sheets the night before at his Hartville home four miles east. He claimed it was in self defense during an earlier argument. The inquest testimony and sheriff's investigation followed as the case moved forward.
Walter E. Pierce twenty one of 317 George place SE died after a ten inch steel rod passed through his body at The Canton Drop Forge and Manufacturing Co. The accident halted the night shift as workers fled in shock. Coroner Douds investigates. Pierce survived by parents two sisters and a brother. Funeral plans pending.
