A public recruiting rally led by Atlee Pomerene drew many young men asking about enlistment in the Marines. Officials reported 28 men requested examinations, with a quota of 40. The event featured a military band and speakers noting U.S. wartime mobilization and shipbuilding progress aimed at ramping up forces and capacity.
The Red Cross rollback parade proceeds through the city on Thursday with the whole town expected to participate in the Great event.
The city will host a 7:30 p m parade of Red Cross workers led by Canton infantry to celebrate the opening of the Red Cross shops at First Congregational Church. Eleven bands will play as thousands of nurses, workers in grey uniforms, and canteen girls march to honor wounded American soldiers from France.
German forces rush about 400000 troops to stop the retreat of the Crown Prince’s army as French and American units press steadily forward. Oulchy le Chateau has been outflanked and may be untenable, with allied gains growing more serious for Germany.
With French armies in the field the Americans advance near Rheims and Soissons as German counter attacks early today fail to halt the push.
