Real estate experts George H. Clark and W. L. Alexander reported to the county tax board that downtown Canton's property values were largely raised. The review shows blocks with increases up to 200000 dollars, some values doubled or tripled, and others reduced where depreciation or overvaluation occurred.
City council, citing strained funds, drops six paving projects for the year and approves paving 8th Street, Madison Court SE, 10th Street NW, and 14th Street NE in 1915. Market Avenue project postponed with $60,000 city share.
German reports say Russian forces evacuate key Polish cities including Warsaw and Lublin as Von Mackensen and Von Hindenburg push forward. Officials claim 45 110 prisoners taken, with German lines advancing from Riga to the Narew as battles rage along the Pissa and Skwa rivers and near Ostrolenka.
Superintendent Baxter and the Liberty district school board move to start night classes at Liberty School. Courses emphasized include English and reading with potential additions. A letter mailed to Portland reports British warships sighted and fired upon a German submarine off the coast near Halifax Nova Scotia last Wednesday. The writer noted 47 shots heard after three British vessels swept the coast, with Canadian censor restricting telegraph transmission.
Secretary of State Lansing announced a Treasury Department led inquiry into the Orduna submarine attack. W C Thompson aboard the vessel provided testimony about shelling after a torpedo failed to strike. Dudley Field Malone may oversee affidavits from passengers crew and officers in New York harbor.
Bridgeport reports wage talks quiet after eight hour day and six dollar weekly increase. Remington management locks workers inside the factory as 25 from Gaynor Mfg Co and eight from Bridgeport Engineering Co join walkouts. Officials say 80 percent of Bridgeport Engineering machinists participate, with no violence anticipated.
Secret agents for foreign governments are nearing success in persuading about 26 000 machinists in Cleveland plants to call a general strike over wages and conditions. W T Jack of the International Association of Machinists says a near total Cleveland machinists walkout is possible despite union efforts to stop it. Agitators in shops making war munitions are blamed for unrest. only a union demand grant may avert a general strike.
Mayor A Stolberg regain membership in the McKinley club following a stormy meeting. Dr B J Spalding led the fight for his election while others opposed the move. A past winter clash and a banquet controversy prompted an inquiry and a club resolution distancing itself from the mayor.
Members of St. Charles Court No. 551 Catholic Order of Foresters are urged to attend a special meeting Tuesday July 20 at 730 PM at the club house to arrange attendance at the funeral of Brother Jacob Ackerman. By the order of Chief Ranger Joseph A. Miller.
The Melbourne Bros. construction of J. J. Burns school stalls after Architect Thayer rejects Trust Concrete and Steel Co. plans over fireproofing. The board demands Berger system fireproofing, while heated exchanges among officials delay approval and progress.
The council postponed action on a plan to erect a comfort station in the Market Avenue public square awaiting alternative locations. A resolution by Councilman Witter to have the service director proceed was killed, with consideration given to sites on the sidewalk south of Tuscarawas and the northwest corner at 2nd Street NE.
The council shelved a plan to build a shelter station in the center of the square and passed ordinances regulating manure handling and a contract delay for NOC flushing tracks. An equalizing board was appointed to hear Tuscara assessment objections. Short term dates were issued to cover property portions of street improvements. Salary increases were approved for the street superintendent and many city laborers. Cards on service company poles were prohibited and numerous minor improvements approved.
