Canton and Stark counties suffered severe weather late Thursday with lightning and heavy rain. Five Holstein cows died when lightning struck a tree on the J. B. Evans farm. 12 vehicles crashed on the road between Harrisburg and Mt. Union but left no injuries. Large hail tore at crops and residual damage was widespread as crews began repairs.
United Press reports the Logan's Ferry Plant in New Kensington Pennsylvania suffered a deadly powder blast killing seven. Victims include Joseph Paustenbach and Andrew Kautzman who died instantly, with five others dying in hospital. Two more workers are critically ill.
Victor L. Berger Socialist leader injured by a street car in Milwaukee July 15. Doctors reported a fractured skull and internal injuries but noted periods of consciousness and absence of fever giving cautious hope for recovery.
Beverly Hills July 19 Russia has called home its diplomats from China and China has done the same. Will Rogers riffs that if both sides pulled their envoys before clashes, no war would occur. He jokes a new rule should require diplomats to stay put once a conflict starts.
Chicago July 19 A brutal north eastern gale battered Lake Michigan described as the worst in 26 years. The steamer Christopher Columbus carrying 1500 passengers from Milwaukee returned at 11 pm with half feeling sick and two slightly injured. Coast guards towed the Sun shine yacht after it lost sails near Racine. Pirates craft Old Buccaneer broke loose in Wilmette harbor and was towed in. Evacuees stayed in hotels as streets flooded and drives closed by two feet of water.
In Fairfield California on July 19 a missing ranch owner Irene Wolfskill a 55 year old heiress from a prominent southern California family prompted a $1000 reward and wide search parties. In Bandon Oregon on July 19 Elizabeth Wells 40 also disappeared suspected kidnaping with coast guardsmen pursuing leads.
Captain George Haldeman, co pilot with Ruth Eder in a planned transatlantic attempt, was forced down by bad weather late yesterday near Yorkville and arrived in Detroit today after flying from Wilmington Delaware.

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce announced a four to five day good will air tour with about 30 planes visiting all state airports. The caravan will start at Port Columbus and finish at Municipal Airport Cleveland on August 23 in conjunction with the national air races. Participating entries come from Columbus Dayton Cleveland Toledo Akron Greenville and Portsmouth with others expected.
In St Louis Missouri the St Louis Robin monoplane logged its 146th straight flying hour at 9 17 a m on Sunday with pilots Dale Jackson and Forrest O Brine aiming to beat a 246 hour refueling record The Missouri Robin sister ship piloted by Joseph Hammer and W Gentry Shelton reached 41 consecutive hours in a similar test Weather remained ideal and both crews enjoyed reading material and meals Shelton reported a mild air sickness but not serious
Closing hours of the June tax period drew a rush to the county treasurer office with long lines at the windows. The office remains open until 3 PM Saturday to accommodate the final push.
Los Angeles July 19 Four of the six dry raiders who battered a convent of Mexican refugee nuns will resign from the prohibition detail, with a reorganization planned. Captain Clyde Plumber is not expected to be affected. The officers apologized to the Sisters and diocesan authorities, saying they did not know they were entering a convent.

Six bandits seized a bank truck in New Orleans, expelled the guard and driver, and drove off with $21,000 in cash and securities from the Hibernia Bank and Trust Co. Police pursued the vehicle but details remain limited.
