Paris July 18 The British use about 140000 men to guard 56 miles of rail as the US organizes railway workers in France. It will take weeks to ready a continuous supply line from sea to front though officers praise progress and anticipate Pershing reaching 50000 troops. Cooperation with French officers grows.
Chicago July 18 The federal trade commission probe into high food prices reaches homes as T M Robertson chief economist reviews Chicago packer ledgers. The jump in veal chops from 30 to 40 cents a pound baffling packers who claim slim profits. The Supplies Committee of the National Defense Council asks 2500 packers in 18 states to reserve 12 percent of peas 16 percent of corn 16 percent of tomatoes and 6 percent of salmon for the army and navy.
Judge Pontius, in a Pennsylvania court, sentenced 23 year old John McGuire of Bethlehem and 19 year old John Leutholt of Otsego to life in prison for second degree murder as conspirators in the death of Peter Loutzenheiser. Each may seek parole later. judge warned the cases serve as a warning to roaming youths.
Retail flour costs advanced Wednesday by 40 cents per barrel. The Canton Feed & Milling Co quoted quarter barrel prices: Sleepy Eye 8.55 Bake 3.45 winter wheat 3.35 spring wheat 3.55.
