City council debates the 1917 budget with X Stobherg urging a total 602 to run the city for the year, claiming 263,435 more than actually appropriated for 1916. The mayor’s figures and department needs face friction over poverty, safety, parks, water supply, and public works spending.
Wenley reports a drowning at Hobertsville in an open cistern on Tuesday morning. Wingert, ten, son of Joseph Wingert, found in four feet of water. bystanders removed his body to the surface and efforts to revive him failed. Survived by his parents two sisters and three brothers.
New York July 18 Cornelius Bliss pp 4r has been appointed to head the Republican National Campaign Committee. Mr Frederick Upham was named assistant treasurer. Upham held this post four years ago and Bliss's father was treasurer when Theodore Roosevelt was elected president. The Bliss appointment surprised many who predicted otherwise.
Miss Bessie Exy of 507 Union Ave SW, a Courtland hotel bookkeeper, is named clerk in the state censorship board after leading civil service exam scores. She will move to Columbus soon to begin her duties.
Alliance and Massillon election deputies named by county board. Alliance agents are Sidney L. Geiger and E M Lincke. Massillon's are E B Crawford and A C Brand. Offices open July 20, remain through November. Portable booth moved from Sixth ward to one block east on 11th street.
George Stoll, wanted in Toledo on extortion charges, was released by Judge Day via writ of habeas corpus on Monday afternoon but immediately arrested again by a Toledo constable. He allegedly wrote a threatening letter from Canton to a Toledo man who owed him money.
Clerk W C Lane of the board of education emailed orders to firms Tuesday for textbooks to be used next school year. Lane was authorized by the board at a two week earlier meeting to purchase the books, but the full list was completed this week. Also notes travel promo and local events in Canton and Nimisila Park.
The Canton board will invite a state inspector to review the Joe Burns school as Melbourne brothers face a building code dispute. Forsythe was appointed principal at Stark and Garfield, with new teachers named. bids on McKinley heating were opened and a special meeting planned to discuss portions of the new high school project.
Cohn, donor of a site and backer of a Hebrew school movement, announced Tuesday that M. B. Margoties will handle the proceedings.
M C Moore of Alliance attended the grand lodge meeting in Baltimore and viewed the German submarine Deutschland in port. The vessel was guarded and visitors were not allowed near it.
State Wiring Inspector E Macy and Fire Marshal Rollin ia examined Canton theaters on Tuesday. Haun said remodeling under orders proceeds satisfactorily with about one in one hundred neglecting orders. Macy conducts a second inspection and will report to chief Buckley in Columbus soon. Both inspectors may expand to other local theaters and will work from the McKinley Hotel on Market Avenue.
Clerk of Courts C. W. Kirk plays villain as a romance battles through probate court. Twenty couples, including Fatt W. Bohra and Lydia Grummel, seek licenses, but an unfiled divorce record causes Pontius to halt proceedings. Judge Day notes the divorce was granted but the journal entry is missing, delaying marriages.
Excavation for a new Sunnyside Electric Co substation near Elonay SH in Canton is nearly complete. The one story brick building will house two transformers and connect Canton with the Windsor line from Wheeling West Virginia, enabling expansion and regional economic development.
Work began on the main building for the Time Detroit Axle Co and grading at the new plant in the southeast city area. The brick concrete structure is part of a 40000 dollar project with a target completion in about 60 days and contracts for the structural steel and building let to Canton Bridge Co. Canton plans a new 200 worker factory costing about 200000 dollars on Harrison avenue SW near Canton Metal Ceiling Co. It will manufacture an unspecified metal product, with early 18 month construction and a sizable payroll. The project prompts relocation of Stanten avenue to clear space for a large main building, discussed at Monday night council.
The Volzer family held their sixth annual reunion at Tony Siunter’s Lake Park cottage Sunday with about 126 attending. Races and games provided entertainment and a business session elected Ralph Staley president A Volzer vice president Lee A Young John Ploesser Howard Fowler and A J Volzer as chairmen of special committees. The next reunion is planned for Munter's cottage on July 19 19.
Nick Walter was arrested Tuesday near the Sheet Beet Co. plant by Special Officer Shaw. He acted strangely and was removed to the city jail where doctors monitor him. Authorities fear he may become violent as the heat affects him.
Clarence Dewalt heard a noise near his chicken coop at 1928 11th Street and fired a rifle. Neighbors say A C May, who was in his yard at the time, caused no threat, but Dewalt was arrested on a feloniously pointing firearm charge and jailed.
Manida M. Fink files a $10,000 lawsuit against Sarah Bail and others in Alliance alleging defective steps in a house she rented. She says notice was served that the steps were dangerous and that the defendants knew or should have known. Her attorney represents her.
Emmanuel was released after submitting proofs he was in Cleveland Saturday, clearing him of involvement in the shooting of Joe Gordon. Police had arrested him on suspicion. officers DiPillo and Tidwell had arrested him, with Singara Falls $4.80 day to August 25 inclusive via N. O T. lines and boat from Cleveland.

Emma Griffin, who never legally married Joseph Griffin, was granted a divorce on Monday on grounds of bigamy. She testified that he was convicted to the penitentiary over a year ago and is now out on parole. Judge Day explained that though she was the second wife in a bigamous marriage, the formal divorce avoids future complications.
