The first anniversary of the 1926 assassination of Don R. Mellett former fisher and editor of The ton Daily News is marked by laying the cornerstone of the Canton Daily News building to serve as a memorial. Attending are Mrs. Florence E. Mellett and their four children Evan Jean Catherine Elizabeth Leu and Martha Jame.
The ceremony honored Don Mellett and his brothers John and Liord with relatives and friends present. Charlee E. Morris, successor publisher of The Fanten Daily News, directed the proceedings and tied the event to the investigation of his predecessor's murder. Local officials Mayor Stanford M. Swarts and Henry A Reemer attended the program with clergy from St Peter's Romans Cathole and a Jewish synagogue contributing prayers and benediction.
In a July 16 Beverly Hills column Bill argues the disarmament conference was a success despite a disastrous ending. He claims no promises were made and no losses occurred, noting conferences breed mutual hatred. He advocates fighting if needed but not conferring.
The body of Alvin Welty aged 21 of East Sparta was recovered Saturday after drowning in Big Sandy Creek near Sandyville Friday night while he swam with two companions including Earl Summers. The drowning marked the second youth lost this week in the same area. Jess McCrery and a team worked to recover the body and called Rush Hiller Saturday morning.
The Canton Daily News holds the Pulitzer Gold Medal 1$24 and will place it in a prominent view of the Baptist church cornerstone structure. A portrait of Don KR Mei t and a replica of the medal faces will be worked into the ornamental frieze at the front of the panding as the cornerstone is laid.

The flights echoed the Bird of Paradise, with Smith and Bronte covering about one hundred miles less in comparable time and landing on Molokai versus Wheeler Field for the Army plane.
The Saranus A. Lengel murder case went to the jury at 1:16 Saturday afternoon after Judge Frank M. Clevenger instructed that every conspirator is responsible for the acts of others. The charge explained that all who join a conspiracy may be guilty of murder in the first degree, even if not present at the killing. Prosecutors sought a guilty verdict in some degree, while defense urged acquittal.
Lawyers' arguments on Page and Judge Clevenger's charge will be printed in Sunday edition.
The Canton Daily News case centers on ex police chief Lengel accused of involvement in a plot to kill a young publisher. Prosecutors claim Lengel knew others planned the assault, while defense argues he did not actively join the scheme. Verdict expected late Friday or Saturday night after tense closing arguments.
