London observers report the Allied conference reviewing the Dawes plan with three committees to draft reports on its operation. Representatives from ten nations spoke optimistically as Premier Ramsay MacDonald chaired the session urging business like methods over politics.
Staten Island police and more than 250 detectives search woods and swamps for a killer who abducted and murdered Francis P. McDonald of Port Richmond. The 12 year old boy’s body was found under brush, with signs of strangulation and assault. A nearby case involved a similar murder last spring at Chelsea woods.
Marlin July 16 Rasured today when President Con Brave signed a warrant for release of DeValera Arthur Stack and other political prisoners. The general amnesty timing is unclear though indications point to early next week with Irish support complicating by demanding release in time for holding the Titian games.
A six month old daughter of the Dixon family was saved when their vehicle overturned in a creek near Cincinnati. The infant wore clothing that kept her afloat until the father could reach her and pull her to safety. The save happened as the car occupants were thrown into the water and mud.
In Cleveland on July 16 a seven month old infant Ho ward Dojorski has a safety pin lodged in the throat. Doctors say the pin may move to the stomach without injuring throat membranes but no operation can hasten its passage. If the pin reaches the stomach it could be removed with a stomach pump.
Canton city council may form a joint committee with the Canton Automobile Club within two weeks to study and implement a stop boulevard traffic system. Safety Director James E. Roberts outlined the plan after a meeting with club secretary Charles W. Flory, noting Cleveland and other cities use the system at key intersections to reduce crashes.
Copper figures of four angels crown the courthouse tower. Custodian Vie Staub and county commissioners agreed to gilt the tarnished angels with gold leaf after complaints of weather damage and possible danger. An inspection will assess further repairs as the 12 foot figures, once bolted with copper wire, are reviewed.
The Stark to Good Roads Federation will meet in the Chamber of Commerce rooms Thursday evening to discuss plans for the coming year. The exact program to be suggested at the meeting has not been completed. The federation has about 40 members and the majority are expected at the meeting.
New York July 16 1924 Democrats move to create a national political machine after years of weak organization. The piece recalls Wilson era control and Tammany Hall tensions, noting funds and leadership gaps in 1916 1920 campaigns and shifts toward a broader party structure with board level ambitions.
Benjamin F. Worster files in common pleas court seeking 15660 damages from The Timken Roller Rearing Co. after a hand was mangled by an electric fan while he was applying asbestos on steam pipes. He alleges oil and grease on the floor and no guard on the fan. McDowell represents him.
Columbus may be without natural gas after September 12 unless a 10 cent rate increase is granted. An advertisement signed by the local gas companies states the city council refused to advance the request, making the situation a question of whether residents want gas after the date.
In Lorain Ohio on July 16 a divers found a woman's body and an automobile in the lake beside the municipal bath house wrecked by the recent tornado. The body is unidentified and coast guards work to raise the car with possible additional victims feared still beneath it.
Edward G. Bockius of the Valentine theater goes on trial for Sunday operation after testimony from a private detective janitor and carpenter. The case, tied to a prior receiver suit, is prosecuted by Lord's Day Alliance with Braucher and Sterling for the state and Amerman for the defense. The jury includes local tradesmen, dealers and merchants.
Mike Shantuck of 13th Street NE was convicted by Judge Bowman in criminal court on Wednesday morning for destroying property and disturbing the peace. He was sentenced to 10 days in the workhouse, suspended on condition he pay Theodore Septanch damages for a broken window after an argument over a laundry bill. Septanch suffered a slight cut from the incident.
Dr H B Cloud arrested by police on Wednesday noon for violating prohibition laws after a raid on his office at 900 Renkert building. Officers Capt Clarke and Patrolmen Geghorn Manderbauzh and VanAlmen seized eight bottles rye extract six quarts whiskey two bottles whiskey flavoring five jugs alcohol two jugs gin and one bottle brandy soda plus a small quantity of wine.
Fires raged along the Pacific coast from Canada to Mexico as 2,500 men battled to stop the blazes. Mount Shasta City faced destruction while Humbug mountain fires near Yreka expanded on a 10 mile front. Santa Barbara and Sierra forests remained serious with millions in damage. The Speranza fire near Shasta Forest was reported under control after heavy timber losses.
The American consul at Santos Brazil has asked Washington to send a warship to protect lives and property as revolutionaries threaten the port. Brazilian officials deny rebel advances and say no ships may enter the harbor while federal forces mass near Sao Paulo to drive out rebels amid intermittent bombardment.
The annual courthouse picnic was decided Tuesday by the committee. All county officials and employees are invited with their families. A sports program will be arranged and the courthouse will be closed for the day. Wallace Schick is president of the picnic association and Miss Hilda Schrantz is secretary.

Immense Croydon crowd cheers American world flyers who landed from Paris at a 150 acre airdrome. Police cordons kept order as Lt. Smith and crew were greeted by officials of the air ministry led by General Branckner. Numerous American flags fluttered across the field and a team of mechanics prepared the planes for the next leg.
Lorain relief drive aims to raise 13000 in Canton as part of a 600000 statewide fund for storm victims. Governor Donahey and Northern Ohio Tornado Relief chair F A Miller back the effort with 600 solicitors to canvass Lorain area and collect through the Chamber of Commerce.
Coroner Todd Carris of Morrow County states Mrs. Elnora Yeoman age 40 admitted in confession to giving her sixth husband, Lewtis Yeoman, mercuric chloride in his office. She says she only gave one dose and is remorseful. Grand jury to review case with Prosecuting Attorney T R Mateer and Sheriff Corwin present.
Francia P. Cook sues the estate of P. D. Hunt in Belmont County Common Pleas, alleging the late owner girdled 20 trees on her farm and claiming 400 dollars in damages. The action was filed in Hendrysburg on July 16.
John W. Davis announces the severance of all legal and business connections as he launches his presidential campaign. He resigns as a partner in Stetson Jennings Russell and Davis and as a director in United States Rubber, Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe, and the National Bank of Commerce. Democratic eastern headquarters open at Murray Hill Hotel with nine rooms. Davis and advisers expect a campaign manager within 24 hours. Democratic leaders map a general program for the early action.
Chicago reports that Nathan Leopold Jr and Richard Loeb confessers of 14 year old Robert Franks are not guilty by reason of insanity. Clarence Darrow says doctors deem them unbalanced and unfit to live in ordinary society. He plans to seek a sanity hearing on July 1 with August 4 trial date in doubt.
The Republican National Committee will set up mass general and campaign headquarters this week at No 2 West 12nd Street in New York City announced by William M Butler Coolidges campaign manager. General headquarters have been indicated though details remain limited.
