Portland area officials report wage protests from police fire and waterworks staff over a proposed $10 monthly raise. Delegations threaten resignations if not granted. engineers and firemen petition for higher pay, with some workers seeking jobs elsewhere if increases are blocked.

City Auditor Barr will prepare a report on the city's financial condition by the second Monday in August. The figures will aid the council in estimating the size of a forthcoming deficiency bond issue for voters at the November election. Previous deficiency bonds of 250000 failed. the next issue is expected to be similar or larger.
Harry Williams pleaded guilty to impersonating a federal secret service officer after threatening a man over a $7.50 debt. Justice Correll fined him 25 dollars plus costs and ordered 60 days in the workhouse. He remains charged on carrying concealed weapons and malicious destruction of property and will be arraigned later this week.
City Auditor Barr reports Canton's non tax revenue remains steady in 1917 at about $20,000 yearly. No new revenue sources were created and no material increase from existing licenses permits fines or other non tax streams occurred.

Senator Pomerene reports Governor Cox alone can fix Canton’s draft quota, despite census bureau population estimates. He cites war department rules and urges local complaints to be directed to the governor for a just distribution across Ohio subdistricts based on reliable data.

Police learned of two daylight robberies Sunday in Canton. S M Grimm of Akron was robbed of 32 dollars by a negro near Wheeling and Lake Erie tracks. John Haubert was held up near Cherryay SE and lost 9 dollars, a 16 dollar bank check, and his registration card. Six chickens were stolen from Mike Spinces’s Coop Sunday night. Also unconfirmed report says four large U- boats damaged or sunk by U S warships while attacking troop transports.
Julius L. Schlafly of Harrisburg road NE sustained slight injuries Sunday noon when his car collided with an unidentified driver. Both vehicles suffered minor damage and the other car fled the scene.
Heavy rains caused a slide on the Massillon road at the Har ter farm hill. Sheriff Norwood notified the commissioners Monday. Commissioners ordered the county highway repair department to open the road.
