A civic committee led by Joseph Markley plans an intensive drive to raise 600000 for Lorain tornado relief, with an 18000 pet fund and 400 relief buffer. The volunteer group will convene at the Courtland Hotel Wednesday at 7 30 pm to organize a one day canvas aiming to meet a 13000 target Thursday.
Thirty one Ohio counties plan to resist utility companies contesting collection of certain discriminatory utility taxes. Prosecutors met in Columbus to outline steps to defend tax collection in federal court. The defense executive committee includes Pred W. Warner Marion B T Lippincott Lima H E Parsons Cleveland J B Shopler Coshocton and Allen G Aigler Norwalk.
At Cairo a gunman fired at Premier Zaghloul as he prepared to depart for Alexandria. The premier was wounded in the flesh. crowds believed him dead and attacked the assailant before police rescued him. Zaghloul, a key figure in Egyptian politics, was later reported resting at home.
Leo Hambeck of Wan charged with reckless driving after speeding at 45 feet per second past a obstruction. In criminal court he pled guilty and was fined 35 dollars with costs and 10 days in the work house, suspended on condition of driving no vehicle for 80 days.

Four officers named including Theodore Svoboda face charges of assault and related counts. Hearing set for Monday with possible venue change and grand jury probe next week. Rosetta required medical care after nose broken rib fractured and bruises.
New York July 12 Federal prohibition officials moved to clamp down on liquor in elite gatherings as a raid on the Ritz Carlton roof garden led R Q Merrick to declare the raids only beginning. He warned the rich and poor are equal before enforcement and that further raids of upscale venues may follow.
July 12 Columbus Detroit man Joe Nagan pleaded guilty to illegal possession and transportation of liquor and a violation of the state auto law. Judge Miller of municipal court ordered a fine of 1550. Nagan was arrested in a truck whose top had been converted into a 150 gallon booze tank.
Canton Daily News reports the 1924 Democratic convention cost an estimated two million dollars, with $800,000 from local entertainment, $200,000 from mayoral funds, and roughly $1.5 million in venue costs. Tex Rickard’s garden rent is pegged at 31,500, and broadcasting expenses across New York stations are estimated near 350,000.
L. D. Burd of Canton, a bondsman for contractor Charles Thrush, is sued in federal court in Cleveland by Barber Asphalt Co. of West Virginia for 3150.11. The suit alleges Burd posted a 28000 bond to guarantee payment for asphalt on Thrush’s Canton job, and seeks the unpaid balance.
Buenos Aires July 12 reports quoted government officials saying the Sao Paulo mutiny by military police was quelled. Federal troops entered Sao Paulo after Braz town was bombarded. Rebels surrendered without resistance as crowds welcomed troops. Brazilian general staff officials took control in Sao Paulo in the government’s name.
Miss Nan Albert of 1702 Cleveland avenue Northwest was named delegate at large from Ohio at the National Democratic convention in New York and used her ballot to select a presidential candidate. She replaced Thomas J. Duffy of Columbus as delegate at large. A special Ohio caucus decided to redraw the delegate list to replace absentees. Albert was active at the convention, prominently supporting Governor Cox.
Cincinnati headlines report police courts hailed 261 autoists into court today for traffic violations including driving through safety zones. The mass arraignment comes as authorities emphasize enforcement of traffic rules and ordinance compliance across the city.
In Cleveland on July 12, three of 31 detained Chinese merchants linked to the On Leong Tong are set for immediate deportation to prevent a Tong war. Hamilton July 12 Robert Quigley 28 faces first degree murder charges for killing his sweetheart Gladys Kirby 17 after discovering her with another man. Kirby died after a gunshot wound that left her between life and death for several days. Quigley shot himself but survived.
E. L. Masse of Ottawala Alabama and Joe Chick of Indiana Harbor Indiana were charged with grand larceny, pleaded not guilty, and held to common pleas court. Judge Bowman set bonds at 5000 each after they waived preliminary hearing. Patrolman Shroudes arrested them as they unloaded 400 dollars worth of stolen automobile tires from a car in McKinley at NW last Wednesday.

In Steubenville, Luther Brown, a Black dry enforcement officer for Jefferson County, was killed by Patrolman William Hawkins during a raid. Hawkins says self defense after Brown drew a gun. Brown led raids previously. Hawkins surrendered but was not held at police headquarters.
