Twelve people die in a powder explosion at the Western Cartridge Co salvaging area near East Alton Illinois. Six of the dead are women. Atlantic City July 11 The National Brotherhood of Operative Potters failed to change its by laws during the convention. Proposals to create new strike time measures were voted down and delegates expressed confidence in the present officials by giving them a vote of confidence.
The body of Justice William R. Day lay in repose Wednesday morning at the family residence 621 Market av N. A bronze coffin in plain design suited his modest life of service. The scene showed quiet reverence with sunlight on the floral tributes as friends came and went.
East Liverpool Ohio reports Elmer O'Brien 28 a pottery worker shot his wife Ruth 26 in her bedroom and then killed himself. The bullet hit a metal hair curler deflecting into her scalp. O'Brien died by a self inflicted shot to the temple after a separation escalation. They have a seven year old son.
White robed Klan members appeared at the Ora Hess farm in Bellefontaine Ohio and harvested wheat with five borrowed binders. The Hess family suffered a fatal lightning strike last Friday injuring Ora Hess Sr and killing the farm’s only horse.
In Delaware Ohio on July 11 the civil service hearing into reinstating Mae Stannard, former matron of the girls industrial home, ended after rebuttal testimony. State and defense will argue an hour each, with a decision expected by 3 pm. An Ohio Federation official warned of court action if reinstatement is denied.

In Chicago on July 11 a 15 year old girl known as Happy Nellie Mumaugh from Toledo was found aboard a freight train after being spotted riding the rods by a policeman. She said she fled home due to parental quarrels, cut her hair, donned boys clothes, and boarded the first freight to ride away.
Mrs. Augusta Brown, 23, of 923 Odd Place SE, is being held for investigation in the fatal shooting of William Dawson, 28, of 437 Fifth Street SE. Brown says the shot was accidental after the revolver slipped while inspecting it in Dawson's room. Dawson died instantly.
Prohibition Director J. F. Russell declared no man is rich or strong enough to violate state prohibition laws and escape. Following a conference with agents from most Ohio counties, conditions were seen as good and a statewide drive to eliminate whiskey and bootleggers will be launched at once.
Advices from Chinese sources say Chinese troops clashed with Canton bandits who looted a Kowloon train. Twenty bandits were killed while the outlaws escaped with captives, all natives.

In Pomeroy Ohio on July 11 authorities feared a verdict jury for James E Miller may not be seated. With 36 regular jurors and 75 alternates exhausted a second center of 50 filled to complete the panel. Eleven jurors were seated while defense holds 12 challenges and the state three. Jurors oppose capital punishment as Miller faces first degree murder in the May 9 Vulcan mine camp killings of James S inn er and Ed Reynolds. The case stems from union miner activity after the armed March of 1921.
Southampton police served summons on 22 crew members of the American steamship Leviathan directing them to appear in a British court to answer desertion charges from British ships in New York.
In Atlantic City on July 11 union mine chiefs led by John L. Lewis clashed with anthracite coal operators over wage scales and working conditions. Operators proposed a plan to avert a Sept. 1 strike by retroactively applying a future contract if talks fail, a move the union rejects as assigning blame for a strike in advance. The core dispute remains recognition of the union as talks proceed.
Four people were killed and three injured when Northern Pacific train 41 crashed into an open switch four miles east of Whitehall Montana. Victims include engineer Thomas Barry of Whitehall and Albert Jacobs of Laurel, with another Californian and an unidentified man among the dead. Barry was crushed for three hours before rescue attempts succeeded.

Lewis E. Bedinger collapsed after nearly three weeks of fruitless search for his wife Anna Marie Bedinger who vanished following a ruse phone call. Police say the 38 year old mother to be may have suffered mental strain as a result of the distress.
Cora Hiller three years old daughter of Mr and Mrs George Hiller of near Nashville fell into a bucket of hot water Saturday and was fatally scalded. Parents and six brothers and sisters survive.
An unidentified boy was killed and several injured when a west bound Hudson and Manhattan tube train collided with an empty east bound passenger train near Vere. A defective switch is believed to have caused the crash this afternoon.
