The Finance Committee recommends trimming ordinary expenses by 6024 for the second half of the year and lists allocations. The safety department gains 180 for fire traffic policemen for July to September. A new assessment clerk position at 85 dollars monthly was proposed with a 75 dollar monthly appropriation.
A special committee will review plans for the Gibbs ay school contract before award. Architect A L Thayer and engineer E W Hanna head the panel, joined by two disinterested engineers. Hanna cites bad engineering practice and insufficient live load design as risks.
Attorney Frank N. Sweitzer named counsel to the state licensing board for Greenland liquor licenses. He will work mainly in Columbus but retain Canton residence and assist Pontius in prosecutions. Thomas H. Leahy named successor and will assume duties immediately in prosecutor's office and probate court matters.
Mexican federal forces near Vera Cruz resist rebels as tensions rise. Former Huerta minister Esteban Ensenate heads to New York after negotiations falter.
United Press dispatch from Vera Cruz July 7 reports federals stationed beyond the American line mutinous and spreading toward the capital. General Funston warns posts not to fire. federals expected to surrender and turn in arms as they march toward American positions near the coast.
City Service Director and Mayor Stolberg defer decisions on McGuire’s recommendations to reduce water rates and fund free city services from general taxes. They seek to run the waterworks on a business basis and build a sinking fund for equipment replacement, while noting legal limits. In July waterworks offices will stay open Saturday afternoons and at noon for rental bill collections for both flat rate and metered customers.

Two divorces were granted by local judges. Edward Stump received a divorce from wife Anna Stump on grounds of infidelity granted by Judge Ake. Anna Bowman was awarded a divorce from Ernest Bowman on grounds of absence granted by Judge Ray.
The Venetian Fete scheduled for July 10 at Lakeside Country Club has been postponed to a later date. J. C. Scott, entertainment committee chair, notes the two day event was disrupted by the weather and will be rescheduled.
Canton police crack down after Moran and Bisciglia classed as offenders for attempting to bribe arresting officers after a gambling arrest. Moran received 10 days and costs while Bisciglia drew 15 days and costs. Williams and Talerico were suspended on good behavior for not attempting a bribe. Judge Quinn urged an end to such bribery attempts.
Stark county suffragists report near completion of petition signatures with about 150 names still needed. Leaders expect 20 petitions to add the required signatures before suffrage hearings. A debate is set Wednesday featuring Miss Lucy Price and Mrs. Robert La Follette, with arrivals in Canton and a Lakeside Country Club dinner for Mrs. La Follette.
The board of education opened bids Tuesday noon for the Jackson street school building. Melbourne Bros. won the contract with 46 200 plus 800 for brick ventilating flues, beating Dawson Construction Co 532 970 and George H White 58 395. Plumbing bids ranged from 4 898 to 5 814 while heating bids topped at 16 700. Several minor bids on electric, painting and other details were received. no action on the suction sweeper.
Large crowd of boys gathered around the Chautauqua tent on Monday evening in Canton and caused disturbances during the program. Women attempting to quiet them were insulted as police drove the troublemakers away after most of the entertainment had passed. The lecture by Sylvester A. Long was delayed briefly and the stage urged attendees to inform authorities about maintaining law and order. The tent wall was torn down and multiple police units were dispatched, with the mayor promising action if needed.

John Beder of Massillon faced legal action from John Jacob Katz after Rover the dog killed 20 ducks. The justice of the peace ruled Beder must pay 35 cents per duck plus costs, with the owner Katz receiving compensation for the ducks and the dog incident.
Canton attorney Celsus Pomerene, brother of Senator Atlee Pomerene, is expected to be appointed by Federal Judge John H. Clarke to succeed A M McCarty as Stark county referee in bankruptcy. Democrats say they have not heard of candidates to succeed Julius Whiting as U S commissioner. The selection will follow Senator Pomerene and Representative Whitacre’s recommendation.
Lillian H. Knisely was granted a divorce from Willis B. Knisely and alimony on Tuesday by Judge Aice. The case, not contested, cited cruelty and incompatibility. Atty. Thomas F. Turner represented the plaintiff.
At an informal Monday gathering of the Young Men's Democratic club Patrick Biffle or Sheriff candidate C W Weeks for auditor and C E Poorman for treasurer spoke with optimistic remarks. The event drew most candidates and a large turnout of club members.

Canton's Mayor Stolberg postpones statements awaiting exact city complaints and unsettled shelter station and terminal franchise issues.
Miss Helen Elizabeth Sailer Daniels of Riverton New Jersey will wed Charles K. E. Chichester Massillon managing editor of the Massillon Independent. The couple became acquainted during her Canton visits and Chichester is active in Lakeside Club society.
The Charles Street Mission reports about 300 dollars raised toward a 2000 dollar goal in the first two weeks of its campaign. Rev. Kimbel says fundraising will accelerate as work continues and the building undergoes remodeling.
Ernest Thomas Lorain twenty year old volunteer firefighter died after falling from a fire truck while responding to a blaze. He served with the local department and was remembered as a brave and dedicated helper to the community.
