Canton honored democracy with a grand parade and ceremonies drawing thousands from many nations. The event, on America's Independence anniversary, showcased unity for liberty and self-government against Prussianism, highlighting resolve that democracy will prevail worldwide.
Thousands gathered at Nimisila park for the Fourth of July pageant titled The Melting Pot, featuring Indian and patriotic tableaux, Uncle Sam, and a drumbeat parade. Canton residents and foreign-born participants united in displays of loyalty as bands played and flags waved amid a strong call for national unity.
Les W Knecht of Canton was taken to the penitentiary Friday to serve an undefined term for bigamy. He had two wives when Canton, who came to Millers testify against him before grand jury who indicted him.
Three Alabama negro soldiers Fred Allen Robert Johnson and Stanley Tramble were hanged at Camp Dodge in Des Moines Iowa for assaulting a 17 year old white girl. The gallows stood on the parade ground as the 88th division formed a circle around the scaffold while three soldiers in booths released the traps. Several collapsed before the traps fell and regimental bands played The Stars and Stripes Forever as death was pronounced.
Three people injured when an automobile overturned on a steep Millersburg hill, killing a nine year old girl. All occupants were Cleveland residents. The girl was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Bell. Mrs Albert Miller, her son, and Robert Barnhart suffered serious injuries.

On the Marne front July 5 two aerial battles left three German planes shot down. Four American and six German planes took part in each engagement north of Bois des Americains and north of Chateau-Thierry. Two American airmen are missing and one body was recovered in the first fight while Lieutenants ONeil and Raible reported downing one body each in the second engagement. A small American raid last night captured prisoners and obtained information.
The McConnell Music Co announces agency for Emerson 9 inch records and a complete stock on hand at 65 cents. The Geo. Double Co jewelers and optics advertises eye examinations without drops at 130 Market Ave S.
Canton Storage Co advertises a sale of household goods and merchandise on Saturday July 6 at 1 30 sharp.
The East Ohio Gas Co warns domestic and industrial users of a probable gas shortage this winter. A Public Utilities Commission bulletin divides customers into domestic and industrial classes with domestic priority. Food manufacturers have first call, war material makers and gas engine users second, others by available supply. If needed, restrictions will target homes with coal heating and later limit domestic supply to 35 000 cubic feet monthly.
AMSTERDAM July 5 Rumors circulate that Germany weighs a proposal to the allies for a mutual agreement to halt bombing of towns outside the war zone. Sentiment in Germany toward such a move is reported strong. Big July hat sale advertised by Arcade Millinery and Canton Storage Co. adv.
President Wilson, invoking 1776 and the Declaration, says the United States and its allies will not stop fighting until a final settlement is achieved. He urges a universal, lawful order sustained by global opinion, describing the war as a fight not for a class but for all mankind. (Continued on Page Eight, Col. 2.)

Stockholm July 5 Finnish forces in cooperation with 650 000 Germans are reported ready to start a campaign in the Russian Murman district. Allied troops including a few Americans guard military supplies there according to dispatches.
President Wilson asks Congress to enact before recess a resolution empowering him to seize telegraph telephone radio and cable systems. Administration expects quick passage though opposition could delay recess.
Police investigate after thieves enter rooms at 132 McKinley SW. Peter Dumas loses forty five dollars in cash a six hundred dollar check a suit and two shirts while Andrew Dodes also has a suit of clothes stolen. No arrests reported.
A foggy head on crash four miles east of Alliance involved Stark Electric interurbans. One man Antonio Sculla died after both legs were amputated and eleven people were injured including William Wallace and several riders from Sebring and Canton. Traffic halted for hours.
The Mc Connell Music Co Ady advertises Emerson records with titles such as Just Like Washington Crossed the Delaware and Just Before the Battle Mother. Priced at 65 cents, the release features late hits aimed at wartime audiences.
