An explosion at the Brian and Jensen Paper Co fireworks department in Omaha on July 3 killed Myron Jensen Harry H Jones and Charles Bryson. The blast on the fourth floor caused $200000 in damage and left two burned ponies unidentified.
Detroit police launch city wide hunt for a killer described as a fiend or maniac after six members of Paul Evangelist’s family are found murdered in their home. The 43 year old herb healer and cult leader is among the dead, with multiple victims aged 4 to 18 months.
Ohio Power Co plans a new five story brick stone and steel office building on its current Canton site at Cleveland Ave SW and 3rd St. The project costs several hundred thousand dollars with completion and start dates slated for mid August. Temporary HQs will be set nearby during construction. The design aims for a modern distinctive appearance harmonizing with the nearby federal building and will house the division main office.
Ossining New York July 3. Ten year old Martin J Feldman ignored being told not to celebrate the Fourth tomorrow by lighting firecrackers from under his bed. A match ignited a series of blasts but a quick fire department response prevented a blaze and he was unhurt.
David Lloyd George denounces former arms talks as ineffective and urges Britain to pursue ambitious global arms limitation. He backs naval conference with the United States and other powers and calls for abolition of submarines, pressing Prime Minister MacDonald to act.
President Hoover will stay at the White House on July 4 with no public appearances planned. Weather permitting, he and the first lady may take a short motor ride in the afternoon and there are no engagements on Hoover's schedule.
Shifting winds drove a crown flame fire through 20 square miles of timberland near Mill Valley California. One hundred homes burned and 500 people became homeless with property damage around 1000 dollars before a wind shift spared the town. Crowning flames swirled toward the sea as refugees moved to safety.
The City of Cleveland, a large monoplane piloted by Byron Newcomb and Roy Mitchell, towed by six Akron escorts, remains aloft above Cleveland airport after a wing rip and fuselage dent. Crew aim to extend the endurance record beyond 172 hours 31 minutes as refueling connections reach from 15 to 16. An attempt on Independence Day will seek a low altitude refueling record at 500 feet over Akron and nearby routes.
Lorren Mendell and Pete Reinhart remain aloft in a monoplane pursuing the world endurance record. Beginning at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, they signaled at 4:30 p.m. that they were ready for another refueling and their cigarette supply was low, with supply ship delivering again.
County Prosecutor John J. Chester Jr. says he will vigorously oppose any attempt by Dr. James H. Snook's counsel to postpone the July 22 murder trial. Defense lawyers deny plans for continuance, noting pending psychiatric examinations by Dr. G. W. Heffner and Dr. John H. Berry.
In Trenton New Jersey fear grows as officials search for what is called the green death a malady killing three children and sickening twenty others and an adult. A dog fed milk from a suspected dairy died but milk analysis found no clear cause. Six week old Horia Dunning died after turning green and other victims shared similar symptoms.
Shapiro 22 attempted suicide by slashing wrists and throat and died at 12:15 after doctors performed a delicate operation and blood transfusion. Surgeons Dr Cohen and Dr Zuckerman saved him briefly but he reportedly wished to die and died despite revived treatment.
Canton prepares for the formal debut of the smaller new U S currency on July 10. The Federal Reserve confirms an ample supply of $5 $10 and $20 notes with few $1 and $2 bills for Cantonians. The notes are one third the size of the current dollars and will function the same though they pass more easily through fingers. No large denomination bills will arrive in the first shipment.
A July 10 start introduces new currency with familiar figures. The $10 000 note bears Salmon P Chase the $500 shows McKinley, and each denomination from $1 to $20 features noted presidents or leaders. The old bills circulate alongside the new until early next year with banks handling both.
James Thomas Heflin Jr., son of Senator Heflin of Alabama, pleaded guilty in district court to reckless driving and paid a $100 fine. He was arrested June 19 after his car collided with a laundry truck on Pennsylvania Avenue. Charge of driving under the influence was dropped for lack of evidence.
A 12 year old Sherman Larkin of 2332 Mahoning Rd NE was struck near Messiniey Ave and 5th St NW by Earl Slighter's car and suffered possible skull fracture. Slighter, of 909 Bluffed NE, swerved to avoid the boy. he was not charged and was released after police investigation.
Battle Creek Michigan July 3 Rev Edward B Shumaker superintendent of the Indiana Anti-Baloon League served a 60 day jail term for contempt of the Indiana Supreme Court. He called his confinement with bootleggers and liquor violators a thoroughly enjoyable experience and said he got along well with inmates. Physicians report he is greatly improved in health and will return home next week.
Perry E. Larson, 47, a Los Angeles Grain Exchange cashier, confessed to planting a dynamite blast at the I. W. Hellman building to destroy records of a $1,000 shortage. He was held in city prison after admitting to police as investigators examined wreckage and gathered fingerprints. Larson said he used company funds during gay parties to cover the theft and intended to ruin the safe and evidence.
A party climbing Mount Rainier in a blizzard sent two men to their deaths and left four others badly injured. Forrest Greathouse of Toledo and Lil from Illinois were believed dead after tumbling 3000 feet down the slope. Edwin Wetzel of Milwaukee was fatally injured, with other climbers under care. Rescuers dug a snow trench and waited for help as injuries remained uncertain. Local report notes the Canton Storage Co. ad ends the item.
The second annual American Legion air derby opens at Harrisburg road airport with 40 to 50 planes expected for a noon start. Officials anticipate 75 to 100 aircraft over four days and a crowd as large as Canton. Deputies and legion officers coordinate gallery handling as traffic is diverted and ticket sales set at 14 points.
