Rioting mobs burn and loot in a race riot setting homes ablaze as Black residents flee. A militia rules the midnight mob after a deadly orgy and killings. Police and troops clash. a Black doctor is hunted amid widespread arson and violence.
Canton must furnish 398 men on the first draft with Stark County at 862. Ohio totals show 32,393 of 6,066,351 residents called. Canton population about 76,000, 1.28 percent of state total. Stark County 160,000, 2.63 percent. Debates over dependents affidavits and guard enlistment deductions create uncertainty for married men seeking exemption. Local draft boards prepare card numbering and duplicate lists ahead of Columbus instructions.
No major city celebration planned for July Fourth but athletic events and picnics are scheduled. Cook playgrounds will host patriotic activities and community gatherings to mark the holiday.
City parks host family outings with the Canton flag raising at Cook Park and a wrestling match at Meyers Lake Ball Park between James Landos and Paul Martinson. A Columbus council, moved by the plea of a blind widow Mrs. John M. Grant whose son is with Pershing’s army in France, considers altering a new street begging ordinance to allow her to seek alms again. The emotional appeal brought members to tears.
Curly the long haired dog sparked a near riot at Cherry av SE when Howard Tate, the city dog catcher, netted him for no visible tag. Jacob Fish, owner, demanded his pet’s tag as four officers and angry bystanders clashed, ending with an affidavit against Tate.
Knights and Ladies of Security Crystal Council No 466 formerly Canton and Star Councils hold their first meeting this evening July 3 over Dime Savings Bank with a card and dance social and refreshments. Meeting called for 7 30 eastern time. All members urged to attend and boost the effort.

Mike Janic of Youngstown was bound over to federal court and sentenced to thirty days in a workhouse for failure to register. Five others faced similar penalties, including Victor Hapaanen of Cleveland with six months at Warrensville, and John Grosevich of Lorain with three months. George Sudeta and Vincent Sudeta of Youngstown, and John Schulin of Lorain each got thirty days.
Thomas Turner and I Leon Gould secured a partial win for Peter Fabian as the Ohio Supreme Court agreed to review his 1915 first degree murder conviction in Summit County. Fabian stabbed Joseph Ferguson in Andress t Akron on November 23 1915. the weapon was alleged blood stained but Fabian claimed red paint discoloration.
English actor Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree died in London after arriving from the United States. He was a noted Shakespearian tragedian and comedian and also a renowned producer.
William M. Penman was granted a divorce from Emma Gelsweidt Penman in common pleas court Monday afternoon. The charge of gross neglect was sustained.
Employees from manager to carrier will celebrate Independence Day, so no issue of the Canton Daily News will be published on Wednesday July 4. The policy follows a long standing holiday observance by the paper.

The disaster scene records 25 Black deaths and two white men, with estimates of total deaths from 75 to 250. In East St. Louis on July 3 mobs attacked the negro quarter after joy-riders fired on homes. A church bell signal summoned about 400 armedBlack residents as fires spread and a paralyzed man was assaulted. Soldiers held back as ambulances aided victims.
A large frame house moved under a city permit blocks traffic at MecKinley Sv and 3rd SW. Two departments dispute permits and arbitration is sought between J D McAllister, mover, and contractor F C Shanafelt, builder of Washington apartments. The move stalled by wires, trees, car tracks and a Standard Oil station.
Government engineers urged updates and the Hydro Motor Car Co will begin changes immediately. The main modification is removable springs and wheels to allow a motor boat to operate, boosting water speed from about 10 mph to roughly 20 mph once wheels are detached. Tests may be held at Meyers Lake or another nearby lake.
